This section of
Flower Street feels more like a road, and oftentimes a racing strip. Our portion of
Flower Street, with its unnecessarily wide lanes and lack of shade trees, seems to
promote a more industrial or commercial zone feel, rather than it's actual single-
family residential zoning.
As a homeowner on this section of Flower Street, I have experience near
collisions while I simply try to enter my drive way. I had one particular incident
where a motorist attempted to illegally pass me on the right as I was turning into
my driveway, nearly hitting the side of my car where my toddler was seated. My
home is past the section where the painted street symbols indicate the transition
from two lanes to one lane but because there is no physical narrowing of the
street, motorists ignore the street lines. I fear when my guests park their cars on
the street (though we have permits) that their car will be crashed into because of
the y tempered speed and recklessness of motorist on this section of the street.
As a mother of a toddler living in this neighborhood, I feel unsafe walking across
the street to Jack Fisher Park because motorist drive so fast and disregard the
crosswalk. While all of us in Fisher Park appreciate the intentions behind the new
lit up crosswalk signs, I am disappointed to say it has not helped tame the traffic.
Just today, May 16, I pushed the button to indicate I was crossing the street with
my 1 year old son and 5 cars zoomed by, not slowing at all.
There are many young families in Fisher Park and adjoining neighborhoods and
we should all be able to feel safe walking our young children to the park, this is
sadly not the case at the moment.
I urge the City to prioritize safety when allocating funds. The facts is, Flower
Street, north of the Santiago Creek does not have any effective traffic calming
infrastructure and it is inequitable to other portions of the street. Flower Street,
2
