Lokm GO—OP LAB
not business as usual.
06/06/2022
Dear Santa Ana City Council and Mayor,
I am writing this letter as a cooperative developer with L.A. Co-op in support of THRIVE Santa Ana
and the City's first community land trust project. On June 7th, please approve agenda item#9,
regarding the Walnut and Daisy Community Micro-Farm. As a community organization that supports
the development of cooperatives and worker/community led enterprises, we are requesting that the
City Council approve an Amendment to THRIVE's Disposition and Development Agreement (DDA),
allowing completion of the final DDA milestones before December 2022.
We have witnessed THRIVE bring together local worker cooperatives, residents and other
stakeholders, architectural design and engineering consultants, with City staff, to design and launch
an exemplary project that will provide healthy food and lifestyle options, multigenerational gathering
and commercial space. Most importantly, this community driven project will provide a model for
economic development rooted in community participation.
THRIVE has recently resubmitted construction plans incorporating comments from Planning,
Building, and Public Works, and expect permit approvals in the coming weeks. Santa Ana is very
close to seeing this historic development become a reality but needs your support. Without your
support, this historic development may not move forward.
The updated DDA timeline also allows for THRIVE to move forward with soil remediation at the site,
to make sure the land is safe for community use, and to complete fundraising efforts before the end
of the year. As you may know, COVID-19 dramatically increased the cost of construction, and this
has impacted the project's budget.
Groups that have joined and supported the project include CRECE Urban Farming Cooperative,
Cooperacion Santa Ana, La Milpa Cafe Cooperative, City Fabrick architectural design consultants,
Sisters of St Joseph, Templo Calvario, and Community Vision and Genesis LA's CalCORE program,
among others.
Please support the June 7th agenda item regarding the Walnut and Daisy Micro-Farm. Thank you in
advance for your support.
Sincerely, 0-
Citlalli Velasquez, cooperative developer
citlalli@lacooplab.com/ (323)807-6838
1625 5th Ave I Los Angeles, California 90019 1 www.lacooplab.com
