Beginning after Labor Day weekend, and continuing
through October 10th: approximately 100 emails were
sent to the Irvine City Manager's office regarding one
James Mai. There may have been some phone calls as
well. We aren't certain.
The emails were sent by local residents who live, work
or study in Irvine, ie who had a standing to demand
answers from the City. They were concerned citizens
who were appalled and outraged that such a person is
even allowed to hold an appointed post.
Despite this collaborative effort by members of the
community, the City Manager's office failed to turn those
emails over to the Child Care Committee members. The
City did not even inform the Commissioners of the very
existence of these emails, despite the high volume of
correspondence about James Mai.
Inexplicably, the City Manager's office further failed to
inform Commissioners and members of the Child Care
Committee that Mai was under investigation by the FBI
for said hate crime. Even more shockingly, they did not
disclose that their own police department was
investigating James Mai for the same hate crime.
