Program Information <br />DA-CP12 - Coronal Polishing <br />DA-CP12 — Coronal Polishing <br />Course Description: <br />In this course students will be required to complete coronal polishing in a laboratory and clinical setting <br />following the Boards minimum standards of Infection control. The student will complete three typodont <br />experiences and three clinical experiences with the last two clinical experiences utilized for the clinical <br />examination. Coronal polishing theory and procedures are taught, a hands-on procedure in which plaque <br />and stains on the surfaces of the teeth are removed from the coronet surfaces of the teeth. Completion of <br />Coronal Polishing requirements will permit the assistant to perform the procedure after obtaining the <br />Registered Dental Assistant license. Upon completion of the course, the student will receive a Certificate <br />of Completion. This course is not vocational in nature and does not lead to initial employment. <br />Prerequisite: <br />Each student must possess the necessary requirements for application for RDA licensure or currently <br />possess an RDA license. Each student must satisfactorily demonstrate to the instructor clinical competency <br />in infection control requirements prior to clinical instruction in coronal polishing. <br />Course Length: <br />12 clock hours <br />(4 lecture, 4 laboratory and 4 clinical) <br />Student Learning Objectives: <br />Upon completion of this module, students will be able to: <br />Describe the differences between coronal polishing and a prophylaxis. <br />Demonstrate an understanding of preventative dentistry and the role of the dental assistant <br />Coronal Polishing Basics <br />➢ Legal requirements <br />➢ Description and goals of coronal polishing <br />➢ Indications and contraindications of corona) polishing <br />➢ Criteria for an acceptable coronas polish <br />➢ Principles of plaque and stain formation <br />➢ Clinical description of plaque, intrinsic and extrinsic stains, and calculus <br />➢ Etiology of plaque and stain <br />➢ Clinical description of teeth that have been properly polished and are free of stain <br />
