Orozco, Norma
From: Timothy Rush <
Sent: Saturday, August 12, 2023 1:58 PM
To: eComment; Sternberg, Brian
Subject: Removal of Fig Ficus Tree on East Side or the Historic Main Library
Dear Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council;
Madam Mayor and Councilmembers;
After a lengthy discussion with Mr. Brian Sternberg this morning I now understand the FACTS of this
issue. And that is that we can save the tree (which is a volunteer and not part of the original landscape plan of
the building and grounds) or we can save the historic building. Without question we vote to save the
building. He went on to say that an effort to relocate the giant tree was explored.....and not viable as it would
cost several hundred thousand dollars and transplanting carries no guarantee of continued success for the tree..
There was also a rumor floating around that the primary reason for the tree removal was to create five parking
spaces........that is false as well.
I suggested that perhaps cuttings/slips of the tree could be offered to the public and given the hearty nature of
this tree variety we could wind up with several hundred "children" of this tree and it can be a legacy of fostering
the Tree City designation of our city. The Library and City are working with Preserve Orange County and at
their suggestion have hired a preservation architect to oversee the buildings renovation. This is a very smart
move to have hired these consultants.
While I am truly saddened to see any large tree be destroyed.....I now understand all the issues and vote for the
preservation of the structure.
Tim Rush
Founder& Chairman G-7
Neighborhood Leaders Alliance
Tim Rush
Chairman
The G-7 Neighborhood Leaders Alliance
"Leaders Leading The Way to a Better Santa Ana"
(
i
