JOHN D MORGAN PARK, CAMPBELL
Project Description: The City's grand vision has been to
provide recreation and learning opportunities to a large part of
the population previously underserved and set out to create
an all-inclusive play area within the mature John D Morgan
Park. The City engaged the PRC and established an Ad
Hoc subcommittee to lead the design process. Community
engagement was integral in developing the park site through
several workshops and lead to the 'Play in the Trees'theme
and play features.
The existing site was well established but working within
the existing forested site and underground root systems
required an adept team to keep the project moving in a
timely efficient process. The site also included underground
utilities within easements that were protected in place during
construction but required a team effort from manufacturer
to installer to avoid field conflicts. The playground amenities
allow users of all levels to play side by side without barriers
and the introduction of a picture exchange communication
board (PECS) for non verbal park users. This may be the
first installation of a PECS board in a public park in northern
California.
Program:
. New play structure wheelchair accessible at upper and
lower elevations and without barriers
• Engagement berm with slides and climbers
• Swing and sway zone
• Tot play zone and spinner zone
• Accessible drinking fountain, pathways and picnic areas,
variety of seating options, and traditional benches
Services: Site design, planting and irrigation design,
stormwater management, construction documents, and
construction administration services
Client: City of Campbell
Fred Ho, Senior Civil Engineer
70 North First Street
vCampbell, CA 95008
408.866.2156 1 fredh@cityofcampbell.com
PROJECT AWARD
7American Public Works Association (APWA)
m 1
2 0
022 Project of the Year (Env/Parks < $2 M)
Size: 1 acre
Consultant PM: Todd Young
Construction Cost: $1.4 million
Schedule: Construction completed December 2021
il, I 11-01-AM Q[TO IN11 M I I M 01 IN QIIIM" kyj INA 0 Lei I ill IQ A N 101 MIEVIN91 IN I U W-11 M11 act. -Is 11 *.*] Lel ill RUM-
40
449
A. 1 41
rstlh I— f IA7L W_
