While the PMP serves as a guide, it is active and engaged project management that keeps our projects
on schedule and under budget. The following are the keys to our successful delivery:
Continual Budget Control
We use Deltek for all our accounting functions. Deltek has modules "Project Review" and "I -Access" that
allow project managers to enter budgets for Mark Thomas and the subcontractors and track spending
in real-time. We use these modules to track earned value on our project and will be done for each task
order.
Our Work Breakdown Structure forms the base for our budget. As shown in the chart, we plan our
work using a resource loaded schedule, monitor the project progress, and track the planned budget vs.
actuals, and we report this to the City on a monthly basis. We review and report any variations along with
a corrective action plan.
20,000
a
w
d
w 15,000
a
x
w
0
CG
0 10,000
a
0
r
5,000
35% 50% 55% 95% 100%
TIME AND COMKITION LEVEL
Proactive Schedule Management
Our project managers are taught to take a proactive approach for planning project activities, looking
ahead and drilling down to track tasks critical to achieving each milestone. Identifying the risks to the
project schedule and mitigating them by advancing early activities where possible without the risk
changes later in design. Our strategy for keeping projects on schedule is simple, track the action items,
communicate key milestones often and over communicate.
"Mark Thomas continues to show flexibility and adaptation with changing
project circumstances to ensure the project fulfills grant funding budget and
schedule. The team is well-rounded, responsive, and proactive to meet project
and design team needs."
- Sarah Aziz, Project Manager, Port of Los Angeles
ON -CALL ENGINEERING SERVICES MARK THOMAS
City of Santa Ana Page 13
