Parks, Recreation, and Community Services <br />https://www.santa-ana.org/parks <br />Item # 12 <br />City of Santa Ana <br />20 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana, CA 92701 <br /> Staff Report <br />February 16, 2021 <br />TOPIC: Santa Ana Zoo Commissary Produce <br />AGENDA TITLE: <br />Award a blanket purchase order contract for Santa Ana Zoo commissary produce to <br />Sysco Los Angeles in an annual amount of $30,000 for up to four years with a total <br />amount not to exceed $120,000 (Specification No. 20-155) (General Fund) <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br />Award a blanket purchase order contract to Sysco Los Angeles for the purchase of Santa <br />Ana Zoo (Zoo) commissary produce for an annual amount of $30,000 for the period March <br />1, 2021 to February 28, 2022, with three, one-year renewal options for a total amount not <br />to exceed $120,000 and any unspent and encumbered balance carried forward into <br />subsequent fiscal years during the term of the agreement, subject to non-substantive <br />changes approved by the City Manager and City Attorney. <br />DISCUSSION <br />The Zoo is working to regain accreditation as a member of the Association of Zoos and <br />Aquariums (AZA). Only the very best organizations meet AZA's high standards for animal <br />care, education, conservation, and visitor experiences. Membership in AZA allows the <br />Zoo to display exotic animals and participate in collaborative animal conservation <br />programs not otherwise possible due to governmental regulations, availability, or <br />prohibitive cost. <br />The superior health, husbandry, and welfare of the animals cared for in AZA- accredited <br />zoos and aquariums is paramount. The United States Department of Agriculture and AZA <br />would require the Zoo to provide a comprehensive nutrition program meeting the needs <br />of the approximately 250 animals living at the park. Under the guidance of the professional <br />animal care staff, diets are prepared daily with fresh produce being a key ingredient. <br />Providing a variety of fresh produce, delivered several times a week, aides in the care <br />and feeding of the Zoo animals. <br />An Invitation for Bids for Zoo commissary produce was advertised on December 1, 2020, <br />on the City’s online bid and management publication system.
