EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT) <br />The EMT course Is 8 weeks In length, and a total of 178 clock hours of basic training is required for completion. Lectures are held <br />five days/evenings per week, and students must also complete 24 clinical hours of observation in either a hospital Emergency <br />Department or Ambulance, or a combination of both. Must be 18 years of age or older. <br />2. Applicants are subject to a background check. The National Registry may deny an applicant eligibility to sit for a certification <br />examination, and deny certification based on an applicant's felony criminal convictions or misdemeanor. <br />3. Successful completion of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) psychomotor examination, to be taken on site at the <br />Institution, <br />Course outline: <br />The EMT course consists of 154 didactic hours and 24 clinical hours consisting of emergency room and/or ambulance observation. <br />Topics covered during the lecture and lab portion of the course consist of the following: <br />1. The EMS System and basic human anatomy will be studied. Students will practice primary and secondary assessment skills, <br />the use of airway adjuncts, oxygen delivery, and suctioning equipment. Successful scene management and the County <br />Trauma Training Plan will be discussed and practiced. <br />2. Treatment of burns and soft tissue Injuries, hemorrhage control, cardiovascular emergencies and cerebral vascular accidents <br />will be studied. Other topics presented Include: types of shock, death and dying, critical Incident stress disorder and <br />ambulance orientation. <br />3. The recognition and treatment of respiratory and diabetic emergencies, poisonings, overdoses, seizures, and head Injuries <br />will be studied. Students will practice spinal Immobilization procedures, mass casualty protocols, and learn to assess altered <br />levels of consciousness. <br />4. Treatments for environmental emergencies, chest and abdominal injuries and emergency childbirth will be studied and <br />practiced. Students will also study prehospital pediatrics. <br />5. Theory and practice for vehicle extrication will be addressed. Students will practice spinal immobilization and removal of the <br />patient from a vehicle.
