Israel and its supporters will use phrases such as "freeing Palestinians from Hamas" or blaming Hamas for using Palestinian as "human shields" to justify their actions while dropping more than 25,000 tons of explosives on the Gaza. It is clear who is to blame for the killing of innocent Palestinian people. Both the actions of Hamas on 10/7 and Israel's subsequent actions are war crimes. SA should be careful with the appropriation of the memory of the Holocaust in supporting a ceasefire and the Palestinian people, as it imperils the city to accusations of antisemitism or using Jewish trauma to support Palestine. Although Israel is perpetrating three of five acts the UN Genocide Convention lists as defining genocide: 1. Killing members of the group. 2. Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part", i believe it is important to be careful with ones wording when passing a resolution as brave as this. It may be inappropriate to invoke the phrase "Never Again", especially considering how Holocaust memory is being used by Israel itself to justify unimaginable levels of death and destruction, and may be more reasoned to focus on the UN's definition of genocide as enough to call for a ceasefire. Gaza is currently the most dangerous places to be a child, according to UNICEF, and Israel's actions are only possible through the US financial support. This resolution is a tremendous step in making the world a safer place for children by demonstrating that SA is a progressive justice -focused city in the US that opposes what is likely to go down in history as a humanitarian disaster perpetrated by the US by proxy.
