I am writing in support of the Orange County Heritage Council (OCHC) putting on Juneteenth in Centennial Park on Saturday,
June 15, 2024. The OCHC founded the Juneteenth Celebration in Centennial Park in June 2021 as an African American
community based event in the long tradition of Freedom Day festivals since 1865 in Texas. This event holds great significance for
me and our community as there is rich history and tradition.
My dedication to attending the festival with my family and friends, treating it like a family reunion, speaks to the sense of
community and connection that events like these can foster. It's heartwarming to see how this celebration has evolved over the
years, carrying on the spirit of unity and cultural pride.
My advocacy for the continuation of this event and the preservation of this community's traditions is commendable. It's important
for cultural events like Juneteenth to be upheld and celebrated, providing a space for communities to come together, honor their

heritage, and educate others about their history.
My voice as a taxpayer and member of the community is valuable, and it's essential that my concerns about dignity, respect, and
cultural preservation are heard and addressed. By supporting OCHC events like the Juneteenth Celebration, I am not only
honoring the past but also shaping a more inclusive and vibrant future for the community.
Thank you for listening to our story and to your commitment as a city to keeping this important tradition alive with passion and
dedication. I hope that the Juneteenth Celebration continues to stay in the hands of the Orange County Heritage Council, as
their 45 years is not only serving the community, they are saving our history, providing resources, and bringing joy and unity to
all who participate.

52
