This year’s historic event is scheduled for Saturday, June 15.

Juneteenth Celebrations are traditional events in many cities and states around the country. It originated in the wonderful
tradition of Freedom Day Festivals which began in Texas in 1865. In June 2021 , the Juneteenth Celebration in Santa Ana was
founded by the OCHC. This wonderful annual African American community based event holds great significance for our
community at large!!

The fact that it is attended by thousands is evidence of the sense of community and connection that events like these foster and
also speaks to the phenomenal job that the OCHC has done hosting since its inception! Santa Ana’s Juneteenth Celebration has

evolved greatly over the years bringing together increasing numbers of community members,
enhancing the spirit of unity, increasing cultural pride addressing the needs of residents and attendees!
Additionally, the numerous vendors have an opportunity to interact with individuals, providing the perfect opportunity to educate
thousands of individuals on the rich African American History as well as on numerous health issues!

I wholeheartedly and without reservation support the continuation of the Annual Juneteenth Celebration in Santa Ana! It is
important not only in the preservation of this community's tradition but also in our country’s history! It is important to note that
Juneteenth is not a “party” but rather a celebration commemorating the notification by federal troops that the hundreds of
thousands of African Americans who had remained in bondage in Texas 2 1/2 years after President Lincoln’s signing of the
53
