ORDINANCE NS-2232 341 <br />Page 37 <br /> <br />Sec. 9-163. Limit. <br /> <br /> The maximum total accumulation of sick leave with pay shall be <br />two hundred (200) working days. Sick leave usage of less than a <br />full day shall be charged in minimum increments of one-quarter <br />(1/4) day. For the eight (8) hour working day the minimum charge <br />shall be two (2) hours, with fractional usage rounded upward to the <br />next higher multiple of two (2). <br /> <br /> Uniformed members of the fire department assigned to the <br />twenty-four (24) hour shift schedule, whose standard work unit is <br />a twelve (12) hour day, shall be charged sick leave at the rate of <br />one (1) day for each twelve (12) hour absence. For these employees, <br />the minim%Lm sick leave increment of one-quarter (1/4) day is three <br />(3) hours, with fractional usage rounded upward to the next higher <br />multiple of three (3). In those cases when an employee is trans- <br />ferred between twenty-four (24) hour shift and normal five (5) day <br />work week schedules, the employee's earned sick leave, which is <br />accrued in hours, shall be converted to agree with the number of <br />working hours per day in the currently assigned schedule. <br /> <br />Sec. 9-164. Extended. <br /> <br /> The city manager may grant leave up to six (6) months without <br />pay to an employee who has exhausted all of his or her accrued sick <br />leave if the city physician or a licensed physician designated by <br />the city manager indicates that the employee will be sufficiently <br />recovered to return to his or her employment within a six (6) month <br />period. Prior to the expiration of the additional time, the <br />employee may return to his or her position provided that he or she <br />has a certificate from one of the above mentioned physicians <br />stating that the employee is able to perform all the duties of his <br />or her position without qualification. In addition to the above, <br />the city manager may grant a further extension not to exceed a <br />total of one year without pay. <br /> <br />Sec. 9-165. Extension by use of vacation. <br /> <br /> After an employee's sick leave has been exhausted he/she may <br />be granted permission to take any earned vacation he/she may have <br />accrued. <br /> <br />Sec. 9-166. Notice. <br /> <br /> The employee taking sick leave shall notify his/her department <br />head either prior to or within four (4) hours after the time set <br />for beginning his or her duties, or as otherwise established by <br />departmental regulations.
