When asphalt cement is prepared by ne;~S ~ <br /> solid asphalts, the solid asphalt used shall be prepmred by dlstillinw petroleum ~ <br /> residue bas a penetration, determined as hereinafter specified, of not less than fee~ <br /> hundredths (0.40) centimeter. The solid asphalt shall conform also to the requiremmto <br /> for solubility in carbon tetrachInt*ide in (d) hereof. The liquid asphalt shall be ~ <br /> from asphaltic base petroleum, free from water and from oils volatile at two hundred <br /> (2~30) degrees Fahrenheit. shall conform to the requJl*emunts for solubility in ~arb~m~pbul- <br /> phide in (¢) hereof and wbm submitted to the volatility test in (b) hereof the I~m ia <br /> weight shall be not more than ~v~ (2) per cent. <br /> <br /> Asphalt cemeut for testing pm~sus shall be delivered by the ContTaetor when aliA. <br /> where directed by the Superintendeat of Streets, and, when ready for me, shall cemJont <br /> to the following requirements: <br /> (a) PENETla. ATXON. Peoetration shall be determined in accordance w/th Speed- <br /> cations D S-16 of the American Society for Testing Materials. <br /> <br /> A sample of asphalt cement at seventy.seven (27) degrees Fahrenheit, when teated with <br /> a standard No. 2 needle under a load of one hundred (100) grams for five ($) eeeonde, 0bull <br /> have a penetration of not less than forty hundredths (0.40) nor more than six~-flve <br /> hundredths (0.65) centimeter. <br /> (b) ¥OLATXLIT¥. Volatility shall be determined in accordance with Specificatiom <br /> D 6-16 of the American ~oclety for Testing Materials. <br /> Twenty (20) grams of asphalt cement in a cylindrical dish ,ix, (6) eeatimeters inside <br /> diameter and two and om: tenth (2.1) centimeters high, when heated for five (S) hours at a <br /> temperature of three h~ twenty-five (~.5) degrees Fahrenheit. in a draft-free ovsu, <br /> shall show a lo~s in we/ght of not more than one (1) per cent. <br /> <br /> The penetration of the residue, at seven-seven (77) degrees Fahrenheit,. shall be not <br /> less than ~fW (~0) per cent of the peuntratiun of the original sample. <br /> (~) SOLUBILITY LN CARBON BISULPHIDE.
