RESOLUTION ~0, 5647 <br /> <br /> WHEREA~, Southern California is a semi-a~ region requiring <br />supplemental water supplies that are brought from great distances for <br />human use~ for irrigation~ and for industrial purposes; and <br /> <br /> WB~REAS, the Southern California a~ea is the center of an <br />unprecedented growth in population, requi~ing an ever-increasing use <br />of water; and <br /> <br /> W~E~EA~ the City of Santa Ana and 21 other cities in the <br />Metropolitan Water District of Southern California have assumed an <br />obligation of approximately $200~000,000 in the construction of an <br />aqueduct system to bring Colorado River water to our people in accord- <br />~noe'with the provisions of contracts with the Federal Goverrm~nt; and <br /> <br /> WHEREA~, this vital water supply is now threatened by a pr~ <br />posed new Colorado River water diversion project in A~izona; <br /> <br /> NOW~ THEREFORE~ BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of <br />Santa Aha be recorded as urging the speedy passage by the Congress of <br />Senate Joint Resolution 145 and House Joint Resolution 226~ which would <br />authorize a fair and final adjustment of the Arizona-California water <br />controversy by referring the dispute to the United States Supreme Cou~t <br />for settlement; and <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body is opposed to anyhow <br />projects calling for the diversion of water on the lower Colorado River <br />until such Supreme Court settlement is made; and <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be sent <br />to each Representative and Senator in the Congress from California and <br />to the chairmen of the Public Lands and Judiciary Committees in the <br />House of Representatives and of the Public Lands Committee in the Senate. <br /> <br /> PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Council of the City of Santa Ana~ at <br />its regular meeting held on the l§th day of March, 1948. <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br />(SEAL) <br /> <br /> <br />
