All chimneys and flues shall extend 2, above the highest <br />point of a flat roof or fire walls, and at least 18" above the <br />ridge of a peaked roof except when a chimney is 10' from the peak <br />it may be stopped level with the same. <br /> If a chimney rises above the roof for more than six times <br />its least dimension, it shall be anchca, ed to the roof with an <br />iron rod or pipe, not less than 1" in diameter, running clear <br />through the chimney and properly secured to it, and all such <br />chimneys shall be laid in cement mortar. <br /> Chimneys and stacks connected with steam boilers shall <br />extend not less than 10' above the wood work of the roof of <br />any adjacent roof within 50' and if sawdust and shavings or wood <br />are used for fuel, the chimney shall extend 20' above such roof <br />and be provided with a spark arrestor. Spark arrestors shall be <br />placed upon all chimneys and stacks when deemed necessary by the <br />building inspector for the safety of property or to abate a <br />nuisance. <br /> Where a building is situated adjacent to one taller, <br />and it is necessary to oa~ry chimneys to height of taller build- <br />ing the owner of taller building must allow attachment of flue <br />to his building. <br /> Chimneys and flues from boilers, r~taurant and hotel <br />ranges, b~kers' ovens and similarly unusually hot flues, must <br />be left exposed to the ceiling of the roof, in which connection is <br />made with the chimney. The building inspector may order a higher <br />chimney when necessary to abate a nuisance or for safety. <br /> All fire places and chimney breasts where mantels are <br />used (except gas grates), whether maintained for an ordinary <br />fireplace or not, shall have trimmer arches to support the hearth. <br />Arches shall be of brick, iron or masonry, at least 24# wide, <br />measuring from the face of the chimney breast, must extend clear <br />across the chimney breast. Hearth shall be of fireproof material. <br />All fireplaces with wood mantles, must have the fire place open- <br />ings surrounded with not less than 6" rim of non-combustible <br />material, between the fireplace opening and wood mantle. The backs <br />and jambs of all fireplaces shall be not less than 10" thick of <br />solid masonry, and openings must be lined with at least 2" of <br />fire brick, Terra Ootta or asbestos composition, or if the lining <br />of the fire place opening is of soap stone, tils or cast iron <br />this 2" lining thickness shall be met by filling in with some <br />non-oombus t ibl e mat er i al. <br /> All wood beams shall be trimmed away from all flues and <br />chimneys. The trimmer beams shall be not less than 2" from tlw <br />outside of a chimney breast and the header beam not less than 2" <br />from the outside face of the brick or masonry work of theflue. <br /> The header beam carrying the tail beams of the floor, <br />and supporting the trimmer arch in front of the fireplace shsdl <br />be not less than 24" from the chimney breast. <br /> Section 21. Hollow tile may be used for bearing walls <br />in buildings three stories or less in height, or for enclosure <br />walls of skeleton constructed buildings of any height, where the <br />wall is carried on beams at each story, but not in party walls <br />which must be built solid. Thickness of walls must conform to <br />the following schedule: <br /> <br /> First Second Third <br />One story 6" <br />Two story g" 6" <br />Three stories 12" 10" 6" <br /> <br /> Where tile work is exposed to the weather, the outside <br />must either be plastered, or some approved means taken to <br />waterproof it. Where a girder or beam rests upon a wall so <br />that there is a concentrated load of two tons or over, some <br />means must be taken of supporting the end of the girder either <br />by filling the tile solidly or with a concrete or iron plate. <br /> No tile shall be loaded to an excess of 150 lbs. per sq. <br />inch of net section in compression, if set on end, or 75 lbs. <br />if set on side, unless a specisl permit shall be issued by the <br />building inspector for some special method of construction. <br /> All hollow tile for exterior walls or bearing partitions, <br />must be laid in cement mortar. A bond composed of wire mesh not <br />less than 20 guage for 1/4" mesh, or 16 guage for 1/2" mesh shall <br />be placed the full width of the wail every fourth course. This <br />mesh must be not coarser than 1/2" and of galvanized wire. <br /> Where there is a concentrated load, some approved method <br />mu~t be used to take care of the load at that point. <br />Hollow blocks and artificial stone must meet the same <br />requirements as laid down for hollow tile and masonry construction. <br /> Artificial stone made of Portland cement and incombustible <br />and fireproof material, may be used as a substitute for any natural <br />stone, provided it will maintain a crushing load of 2000 per sq. <br />ft. of net area. <br /> Section 22. All excavations shall be guarded and pro- <br />tooted as to prevent the same from becoming dangerous to persons <br />or p~operty. When necessary precautions must be taken to prevent <br />the caving in of the sides,and the building inspector is hereby <br />given authority to order such to be done when necessary. The depth <br />of ll feet below the adjacent curb level is hereby fixed as the <br />standard depth of foundations. <br /> Basement unde~sidewalks must not extend farther from <br />the building than to within 3' of the curb line. <br /> Sidewalks shall be designed and eom tructed to sustain <br />a safe live load of 250 lbs. per sq. ft. <br /> <br /> <br />
