Nothing shall be built above the roof of the stage, which
<br />must be left open to the sky, but the auditorium and parts of
<br />the theater used by the audience if ~ncloeed in fireproof
<br />construction may form part of th~ building used for offices,
<br />stores or apartments, provided that the walls of the auditorium
<br />be carried up solidly to and through the roof, excepting as
<br />exits are provided.
<br /> Nothing shall prevent a roof garden, a~t gallery or rooms
<br />for office purposes being placed above the theater, provided
<br />that the ceiling or roof of the theater proper is mede of fire-
<br />proof material, and that the structure built above is construct-
<br />%~a~ ~ire~r~of material~. But no. part of ~ny.$heaSer building
<br /> e uea for carrying on any ous~ness searing zn any
<br />article Or material dangerous to life for manufacturing purposes,
<br />and no lodging accommodations shall be allowed in any part of
<br />the building communicating the auditorium or the stage, all doors
<br />in every p~rt of the theater used by the public must be made to
<br />swing outwardly and ali doors which can be used for exit purposes
<br />must be left unlocked during performances allowinz clear passage-
<br />way to the street in each case. Panic bolts may Be used on
<br />doors provided the doors are so fastened as to yield at a very
<br />slight push outward.
<br /> No workshop, stage or general property room shall be
<br />allowed above the auditorium or stage or in any of the fly galler-
<br />ies, but all such rooms shall be located in the rear Or at the
<br />side of the stase and in such cases must be separated from thz
<br />stage by a fireproof wall and the entrances to such rooms guard-
<br />ed by automatic fire doors, A fire wall built of masonry s~all
<br />separate the audotorium from the stage and extend at least 4' O"
<br />above the stage roof.
<br /> Above the proscenium opening there shall be a steel or
<br />reinforced concrete girder of sufficient strength to safely
<br />support the load above. If of steel, this girder must be fire
<br />proofed with masonry not less than 4" in thickness or 2, of
<br />concrete. The frame around the proscenium opening must be
<br />made entirely of fireproof materials, and if metal is used, it
<br />must be backed solidly.
<br /> The proscenium opening shall be provided with a fireproof
<br />or metal curtain approved by the building inspector. This curtain
<br />shall over~ap the proscenium wal~ at top and both sides and run
<br />in iron grooves or channels not less than 6" deep. This runway
<br />to be securely fastened to the fire wall in such a way as to
<br />allow the passsge of fire and to extend not less than 3' O, above
<br />the top of the curtain when raised to its highest point. This
<br />fireproof curtain is to be suspended by iron or steel cables
<br />passing over suitable fireproof pulleys, and the excess weight of
<br />the curtain is to be overcome by a check rope of cotton or hemp
<br />extending to the floor on both sides of the stage and to the
<br />fly gallery, so arranged that the cutting of the rope at any of
<br />these points will release the curtain, and al low it to fall at
<br />its normal rate of speed. This curtain shall be lowered after
<br />each act, and at the close of the performance. If the curtain
<br />is of asbestos, it must be reinforced, with wire, and at the
<br />bottom of the curtain must be placed a rigid metallic rod or bar
<br />of the proper w~ig~t, properly fastened ate carry the curtain
<br />down. In any case the curtain must be of such a weight when
<br />released, to drop of its own weight. There shall be no doorway
<br />through the proscenium wall from the auditorium above the leve~
<br />of the first floor. ~ny doorway through the proscenium w~ll
<br />must be provided with self closing fire doors on each side so
<br />hung as to be easily opened from either side of the wadi at all
<br />times. Above the stage there shall be constructed one or more
<br />ventilators of incombustible material near the center of the
<br />stage above the highest point of the roof. The combined areas
<br />of these ventilators must equal ten per cent of the area en~
<br />closed within the stage walls. The openings in this ventilator
<br />must equal the area specified above, and must be so closed ~
<br />valves, louvers or dampers as to open automatically when released.
<br />A hemp or cotton cord shal~ control these dampers, and this cord
<br />shall be carried to each side of the opening in the proscenium
<br />wall, and to the fly galleries, and shall be so ~rranged that
<br />when the cord is out, at any of these points, the ventilators
<br />will open automatically to thei~full extent. There sha~l be a
<br />fusible link inserted in this cord at a point at or near the
<br />bottom of the ventilator.
<br /> All that part of the stage that is not used for the
<br />presentation of a scene, shall be built of fireproof construction.
<br />All partitions of dressing rooms and passageways and all ot~r
<br />pemtitlons on or about the sides of the stage, shall be con-
<br />structed of fireprcof materials, and all shelving and cupboards,
<br />and property rooms, dressing rooms or other stage rooms, shall
<br />be constructed of fireproof material. None of the windows open-
<br />ing through the outside walls of the stage, shall have fixed
<br />sash or iron grills or bars, or be locked shut by any mesns,
<br />unless the same are arranged to open easily from the inside,
<br />and are kept unlocked during performances. There shall be a
<br />~indow or door opening directl? from the fly gallery through
<br />the outside wall of the stage upon a fire escape, or some
<br />other exit. There shall be placed upon the stage of every
<br />theater an approved fire alarm box to be connected directly with
<br />the city fire alarm system, such installation to be approved
<br />by the chief of the fire department.
<br /> The auditorium proper shall be separated from the
<br />entr@nce vestibule by walls built of fireproof materials.
<br />All stair cases for the use of the audience shall be enclosed
<br />in wal~s of fireproof materials, and the openings to such
<br />
