ARTICLE V <br />5.0 ASSIGNMENT AND OTHER PAY ADDITIVES <br />5.1 Bilinctual lay. An employee who is assigned by the Fire <br />Chief or his designee to a position requiring bilingual <br />capability in both English and either Spanish, Vietnamese or <br />other languages designated by the City Manager, will be paid <br />a monthly assignment pay differential in accordance with the <br />criteria and amounts set forth below; <br />A. Certification by the Executive Director of <br />Personnel Services as having satisfactorily <br />demonstrated conversational fluency in both <br />languages for any position requiring bilingual <br />capability. <br />B. Positions for which the Fire Chief has determined <br />that bilingual proficiency is essential to carry <br />out duties and responsibilities of a critical <br />and/or emergency nature without ready access to <br />backup assistance, or positions where bilingual <br />public contact is a major and essential element of <br />the work being performed, will be designated as <br />Primary Bilingual Assignments. A qualified <br />incumbent of such position will be paid a monthly <br />differential of one hundred fifty dollars ($1.50) <br />above his or her then current base monthly salary <br />step. <br />During the term of this Agreement, the City agrees <br />that all positions assigned to the class of Fire <br />Battalion Chief shall be considered to be Primary <br />Bilingual Assignments. <br />C. Qualified employees in the classes of Deputy Fire <br />Chief, Fire Marshal, or Fire Communications <br />Manager who are assigned to positions involving <br />the regular and frequent use of bilingual skill in <br />both English and either Spanish, Vietnamese or <br />other language designated by the City Manager will <br />be paid a monthly pay differential. of forty <br />dollars ($40) above his or her then current base <br />monthly salary step. Incumbents in those <br />positions where bilingual proficiency is essential <br />to the performance of duties and responsibilities + <br />of a critical anal/or emergency nature, or of <br />positions where bilingual public contact is a <br />major, essential or integral element of the work <br />being performed, will be paid a monthly <br />differential of one hundred fifty dollars ($150) <br />above his or her then current base monthly salary <br />step. <br />
