RESOLUTION NO. 61-108 OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF SANTA <br />ANA, CALIFORNIA, FAVORING ACQUISITION OF CONTROL OF <br />THE WESTERN PACIFIC RAILROAD COMPANY BY THE ATCHISON, <br />TOPEKA AND THE SANTA FE RAILWAY COMPANY AND OPPOSING <br />SUCH CONTROL BY SOUTHERN PACIFIC COMPANY <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the growth and development of the Western part of the <br />United States of America has been greatly aided by the railroad systems <br />servicing this vast area; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, California's economic well-being is still largely <br />dependent upon good and reasonable rail freight rates to move merchan- <br />dise of all kinds to this State from the East and to the East from this <br />State of California; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Santa Aha is the County Seat, and the <br />financial, commercial and industrial center of Orange County, the <br />fastest growing County in the United States of America, in the State of <br />California, and as such has an enlightened self-interest in the efficiency <br />and economic health of the rail services linking this area and this <br />State with the rest of the United States; and a special interest in the <br />maintenance and functioning of the competitive system between the rail <br />lines servicing said area. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, after study and consideration, it is hereby <br />resolved that the City Council of the City of Santa Ana, California, <br />hereby declares its approval of the acquisition of The Western Pacific <br />Railroad Company by the Santa Fe Railway Company, and urges the Inter- <br />state Commerce Commission to officially approve such acquisition either <br />by merger of said two Companies or by purchase of a majority of Western <br />Pacific stock by the Santa Fe Railway Company. This Council further <br />expresses its opposition to the control of Western Pacific by the <br />Southern Pacific Company by whatever means the same might be effected. <br /> <br /> This Council recognizes the need for merger of various railway <br />companies to maintain the economic health of the American railway <br /> <br />-1- <br /> <br /> <br />
