CITY OF SANTA ANA <br /> <br />PLAN EXAMINER <br /> <br />DEFINITION <br /> <br />Under direction, to examine plans and drawings for the construction, <br />alteration or repair of single family residential, apartment, conven- <br />tional commercial or industrial buildings, and associated structures. <br />The purpose of this plan examination is to insure adequate provision <br />for structural safety and compliance with pertinent building regula- <br />tions and State laws prior to issuance of a building permit. <br /> <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Examines the plans for proposed structures such as conventional commer- <br />cial or industrial buildings, residential buildings, and auxiliary <br />structures, such as signs, walls or fences, to determine compliance <br />with pertinent building regulations and State laws, approves or dis- <br />approves such plans, and assists in the review of particularly complex <br />plans; advises and assists engineers, architects, contractors, builders <br />and owners and the general public with regard to interpretation and <br />application of pertinent building regulations and State laws; checks <br />structural calculations and test reports; may occasionally perform <br />structural inspections in the field on special projects. Assists in <br />certain specified administrative functions such as the development of <br />statistics and the preparation of reports related to the departmental <br />work program, reviews and makes recommendations regarding departmental <br />forms and procedures, and performs other related activities as required. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS <br /> <br />This is responsible technical work which requires the employee to exer- <br />cise good judgment in the examination of plans for building construc- <br />tion, alterations or repair, to determine compliance with pertinent <br />legal requirements, and to approve or disapprove the plans. This work <br />is performed under the general direction of the Plan Checking Engineer. <br />An employee in this class also provides administrative assistance in <br />specified areas. <br /> <br />MINIMUM BASIC QUALIFICATIONS <br /> <br />Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in <br />engineering or architecture, and one year experience in the checking of <br />building plans. This qualification may be met by an equivalent combina- <br />tion of education and experience; for example, a valid Engineering-in- <br />Training Certificate issued by the State of California may substitute <br />for the degree requirement, or progressively responsible experience in <br />building plan checking or in structural project design may substitute <br />for the required education on a year for year basis. <br /> <br /> <br />
