CITY OF SANTA ANA <br /> <br />ACCOUNT CL~RK <br /> <br />DE?hNITION <br /> <br />Under supervision, performs responsible clerical work in processing documents involved <br />in financial transactions and in preparing and maintaining financial and accounting <br />records. <br /> <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Gathers, assembles, tabulates, compares, verifies and posts financial and statistical <br />data; prepares or verifies and processes bills and similar documents; posts and bal- <br />ances cash books, ledgers, subsidiary journals, and other municipal financial and <br />accounting records in accordance with predetermined classifications and procedures; <br />makes adjusting, opening and closing entries; reconciles accounts to general ledgers <br />end prepares routine reports and statements; computes, clasaifies, and prepares bill- <br />ings; maintains bond registers and clips coupons; sends motices and keeps records of <br />payment delinquencies; closes cancelled accounts; receives money and maintains records <br />of receipts; maintains files of invoices, and other financial transaction documents; <br />operates various office machines, including adding machines, comptometers, calculators, <br />bookkeeping machines and typewriters; may assign and review the work of subordinate <br />level clerical personnel; may compose and type routine correspondence incidental to <br />primary assignment and perform other general office clerical work as required. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS <br /> <br />This is responmib]e clerical work of a specialized nature reqqiring the application <br />of bookkeeping principles, the exercise of independent judgement, and the skilled <br />operation of bookkeeping and related machines in the maintenanffe of financial and <br />other accounting recordg. Work is performed with independence in accordance with <br />'clearly established systems and procedures and is reviewed through internal controls <br />and periodic audit. <br /> <br />REqUIRm~ENTs <br /> <br />Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, including or sup- <br />plemented by courses in office practice, and considerable responsible experience in <br />performing financial, statistical or other clerical work offering specific and sub- <br />stantial preparation for the performance of the duties described above. <br /> <br />DESIRABLE ~OWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES <br /> <br />Knowledge of the application of bookkeeping principles and practices and skill in <br />applying these principles to the keeping of accounts and the preparation of financial <br />statements. Knowledge of governmental accounting methods and some knowledge of the <br />principles of fund accounting. Ability to make arithmetic calculations accurately <br />and rapidly. Ability to understand and carry out general oral and written instruc- <br />tions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships wit% other <br />employees and the general public. Skill in the operation of adding machines, cal- <br />culators, bookkeeping and similar office machines. Skill in filing and maintaining <br />office records. <br /> <br /> <br />
