Tt' OF SAllTA ANA <br /> <br />RELATIONS ASSlSTA~.% <br /> <br />DEFINITION <br /> <br />Under direction, works with citizen groups, civic organizations and governmental agencies <br />in developing and implementing community relations programs directed toward the better- <br />ment of the City's social, cultural and physieal well-being. <br /> <br />BXANPLES OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Meets with cormmunity groups with the object of improving community relations and advises <br />on courses of action in specific problem areas; assists groups in analyzing and evalua- <br />~tng community conditions and needs and assists in establishing goals and techniques for <br /> ~ execution of community relations programs; provides oral and written information to <br /> :izens, citizen groups, civic organizations and governmental bodies at ali. levels, and <br /> ~aks before groups on subjects related to community relations; investigates and studies <br /> uplaints and counsels with citizens on a wide variety of problems and assists indivi- <br /> ~als or groups in solving difficulties in inter-group or inter-personal relationships; <br /> .erves as liaison between members and representatives of community groups to develop <br /> and maintain communications between such groups and the City government; reviews various <br /> federal and state aid programs for municipalities to determine possible areas of assist~ <br /> an~e; collects data and prepares the formal application by the City; assists in the <br />supervision of community center and community relations staff; assists in the preparation, <br />of proposed budgets covering community relations operations; performs related work~. <br />~equired, ,, ~ -, <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS <br /> <br />An employee in this class is responsible for the applicatio~ of knowledge and skill to <br />community relations problems and solution-finding, Exercises a considerable amount of <br />independent judgement and initiative in carrying out assignments, Emphasis is placed <br />on establishing an effective working relationship with minority or disadvantaged resi- <br />dents of the community, Supervision is received directly, from the Assistant to the <br />City Manager-Co~nunity Relations, <br /> <br /> ASIC REqUIRm mTS <br /> <br />Education equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree <br />in a behavioral science, public or business administration, or related field. Respon- <br />sible work experience in pubiic administration or related field concerned with the <br />improvement of intergroup relations, social development or public or private community <br />improvement may be substituted for up to two years of college on a year for year basis. <br /> <br />DESIP, ABL~,~q~]LEDGE,,' ~ILLS AND ABILITIES <br /> <br />Kno¥1edge of the causes and effects of racial, religious and ethnic social problems on <br />all social strata; knowledge of the principles.of counselling and guidance; ability to <br />organize groups and direct group activity; ability to ~ork with and speak before the <br />general public, community leaders and people of various cultural, socio-economic and <br />ethnic backgronnds; ability to analyze various types of community relations problems <br />and to make recommendations as to their solution; ability to prepare and present com- <br />plete and accurate reports; ability to assist in the coordination of the planning ~n}! <br />administration of the community relations program with community relations staff, C~ty <br />departments and with community organizations. <br /> <br /> <br />
