SERVICE OFFICER <br /> <br />~EFINITIO~ <br /> <br />Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine, non-hazardous crime pre- <br />vention and other law-enforcement work not requiring peace officer status. <br /> <br />.EXAMPLES OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Performs low risk surveillance duties and explores situations related to the <br />ission of crimes against property; contacts theft victims and i~mlediate neighbors <br />to solicit security inspections of property in order to identify security problems <br />or other conditions which advantage criminal activity.and to reco~m%end security <br />devices and other appropriate protective measures; makes spot-check security patrols <br />of properties at request of vacationing residents; participates in crime prevention <br />education activities, including writing brochures and conducting public presentations <br />for property owner and other community groups; participates in community relations <br />activities of the department; performs selected vehicle code enforcement work, such <br />as conducting abandoned auto investigations and impounding abandoned vehicles; <br />directs and controls crowds and traffic at accidents or special events; gathers <br />and analyzes data; prepares records and reports; and performs other related duties <br />as required. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS <br /> <br />Positions in this class involve entry-level, non-sworn police support duties in the <br />field involving minimal hazard. Initial assignments are performed under close super- <br />vision, however, as skill and experience are gained, incumbents are expected to <br />assume more responsible, independent roles under only general supervision. Work' is <br />reviewed through observation, conferences, review of .records and reports and <br />evaluation of performance. <br /> <br />RECOMMENDED .MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS <br /> <br />Education equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in public <br />contact work or. any equivalent amount of training and experience which provides <br />the following knowledge, skills and abilities: <br /> <br />Some knowledge of the organization and functional responsibilities of a police depart- <br />ment and of the community services provided by other public and private agencies. <br />Ability to: acquire a working knowledge of various criminal an~ vehicle codes and <br />police report writing requirements; obtain information through interview and obser- <br />vation; analyze situations quickly and objectively; cope with emotionally tense <br />situations firmly, courteously and tactfully and to react quickly and calmly to <br />emergency situations; express ideas clearly and concisely orally and in writing; <br />keep records and prepare reports. <br /> <br />Special Requirements: Minimum age of 18 years; possession of a valid California <br />Drivers License; willingness to work any shift, rotating shifts, or irregular duty' <br />assignments; satisfactory record as a law-abiding citizen; a state of health con- <br />sistent with the ability to perform assigned duties; and interest in law-enforcement <br />work. <br /> <br />Zv <br /> <br /> <br />
