~ITY OF SANTA ANA <br /> <br />~AS..S, ISTANT CITY ENG. INEER <br /> <br />DEFINITION <br /> <br />Under administrative direction, performs responsible professional engineering and <br />administrative work in directing various activities of the Engineering Division. <br /> <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Plans, organizes, supervises and coordinates the work of several sections of pro- <br />fessional and technical engineering personnel engaged in the preparation of designs, <br />plans, specifications, estimates and reports involved in the construction, main- <br />tenance and operation of a wide variety of engineering works; supervises and parti- <br />cipates in the preparation of major engineering studies; serves as technical <br />advisor to administrative and legislative officials on engineering proposals; <br />confers with local and other governmental officials and civic groups on engineering <br />problems; assists in budget-preparation and formulation of long-range programs for <br />public improvements; prepares and presents various regular and special reports; <br />attends conferences and meetings; directs the keeping of official maps, plans, <br />profiles, field notes and other records and memoranda; acts for the Director of <br />Public Works in his absence or at his direction; performs other related work as <br />required. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS <br /> <br />The work of an employee in this grade is of an importaRt engineering nature invol- <br />ving supervision of design of major structures or other engineering tasks in <br />connection with important projects and usually requiring the exercise of consider- <br />able independent jud,..._nt based on a knowledge of both theory and practice. An <br />employee in this grade works under general supervision, receiving assignments in <br />general terms, either in written or verbal form, which outline the general type of <br />project, location and characteristics. The Assistant City Engineer usually deter- <br />mines the general method of procedure, closely supervises the more difficult phases <br />of design and delegates to subordinates the more routine design, detail, drafting <br />and estimating portions of the work. An employee will work under general adminis- <br />trative and technical direction and is responsible for the soundness of engineering <br />features of the design. Supervision is exercised over engineers of lower grade <br />engaged in the less complex phases of engineering work. <br /> <br />~IN]/413MBASIC QUALIFICATIONS <br /> <br />Six years professional experience in civil or structural engineering of which two <br />years must have been in a responsible supervisory capacity, graduation from a college <br />or university of recognized standing with specialization in civil or structural <br />engineering. Necessary Special Requirements: Registration as a Civil Engineer with <br />the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers. <br />Possession of a valid California drivers' license. <br /> <br />DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGe, SKILLS AND ABILITIES <br /> <br />Thorough knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices, together with the <br />ability to apply such knowledges to the solution of specific engineering problems <br />in the field of Public Works, including development, improvement, construction, <br />maintenance and operation. Considerable knowledge of surveying and construction <br />principles and practices, and ability to relate engineering design to those other <br />functions. Ability to lay out, plan and direct the work of a group of engineers <br />and technicians. ~ <br /> <br /> <br />
