CITY OF ~ANTA ANA <br /> <br />PARKS b-ND TREES SUPERINTENDENT <br /> <br />DEFINITION <br /> <br />Under administrative direction of the Director of Recreation and Parks, plans and admin- <br />isters the City's park, playground, median island and tree maintenance functions and <br /> <br />E~YC.~IPLES OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Confers with and assists the Director in the formulation and development of programs, <br />projects, general work schedules, and priorities regarding the development, care and <br />/mprovement of parks, playgrounds and median islands and the planting and care of trees <br />on City property; directs the operation of the City nursery; supervises the maintenance <br />of a ~aster plan for and an up-to-date inventory of street trees; supervises the construc- <br />tion of ne~ parks and playgrounds; establishes and enforces, through subordinate super- <br />visors, operating policies, procedures and performance standards; plans, schedules, <br />assigns and directs the %;ork of the division and assigns manpower, equipment and other <br />resources; develops data for and prepares preliminary drafts of bid specifications and <br />agreements for maintenance service contracts; supervises the monitoring of ~ork performed <br />by contractors; selects, develops, supervises and evaluates principal subordinate and <br />directs the selection, placement, training and evaluation of other personnel; directs <br />a continuous in-service training program including instruction in safe ~ork practices; <br />ensures safety regulations are strictly observed and enforced; prepares budget estimates <br />and administers approved budget; requisitions equipment, material and supplies; prepares <br />reports and maintains records. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS <br /> <br />This ts responsible supervisory and administrative work in planning and directing the <br />activities of two major divisions of the Recreation and Parks Department. The incumbent <br />must exercise considerable independent judgement in developing end carrying out assigned <br />functions and activities and is accountable for the achievement of major program objec- <br />tives. Work is reviewed through conferences, inspections of parks and tree maintenance <br />operations, evaluation of results achieved and reports from the public. <br /> <br />RECOMMENDED MINIMUM qUALIFICATIONS <br /> <br />Education and training equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university <br />~rlth specialization in horticulture, arbor;culture, forestry, park management, landscape <br />architecture or closely related field; five years' progressively responsible park/tree <br />maintenance experience including two years as a supervisor or in an administrative capac- <br />ity with responsibility for the development of programs and the allocation of resources; <br />or any equivalent combination of training and experience ~/~ieh provides the following <br />knowledge and abilities: <br /> <br />Thorough knowledge of: the methods, equipment and materials used in the construction <br />and maintenance of landscaped areas and playgrounds and related facilities; the propa- <br />gation, planting and care of grasses, plants, shrubs and trees. Working knowledge of <br />budget preparation and control, purchasing, contract administration and principles and <br />techniques of supervision. Ability to: plan, organize and supervise the ~ork of per- <br />sonnel engaged in park and tree maintenance and development operations; prepare cost <br />estimates; cora~unieate clearly and coneisely orally and in ~riting; sad establish and <br />maintain effective ~orktng relationships with other management personoel, subordinates <br />and the public. <br /> <br /> <br />
