~T~ OF SANTA ANA <br /> <br />HORTICULTURE SUPERVISOR <br /> <br />DEFINITION <br /> <br />l~nder general supervision, supervises the operation of the City Nursery/tree farm and <br />the ~aintenance of al/ landscaped medians in the City and develops and conducts an <br />in--service horticultural training program for parks/tree maintenance e~ployees. <br /> <br />EY, AHP~.~,S OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Plans, lays out, assigns and supervises the work of employees engaged in the propaga- <br />tion of plants and trees from cuttings and seeds and by budding and grafting; super- <br />vises soil preparation, tree boxing and belling, and the shifting, potting, planting <br />and care of stock; sets ~ork standards and checks work in progress and upon completion; <br />enforces safety regulations; supervises the purchase of trees, shrubs, plant materials, <br />fertilizers and insecticides; supervises the care and maintenance of all landscaped <br />medians in the City, including work performed by contractors; advises on and super- <br />vises the construction and maintenance of arboretums; develops, organizes, super- <br />vises and participated in an in-service program for the training of entry-level and <br />experienced grounds maintenance personnel and gardeners in proper horticultural and <br />arborieultural methods and techniques including: turf management; shrub and tree <br />planting, care and pruning; plant, pest and disease identification; application of <br />fertilizers, soil additives, insecticides and pesticides; and propagation and trans- <br />planting; prepares training curriculum and materials; prepares training curriculum <br />and materials; arranges for training facilities; maintains records on training program, <br />submits progress reports, and evaluates completed programs; prepares budget estimates <br />and controls expenditures for activities supervised; and performs other related duties <br />as required. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS <br /> <br />This is responsible technical and supervisory ~ork involving the application of a high <br />degree of knowledge of and skill in horticulture and arboriculture to the operation <br />of s municipal nursery and the development and operation of a continuous in-service <br />training program for parks/tree maintenance personnel. Work also involves supervision <br />of in-house personnel and contractors engaged in care and maintenance of landscape <br />medians. Reports to Parks and Trees Superintendent. <br /> <br />RECO~MENDEDMINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS <br /> <br />Education and experience equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university <br />with specislization in horticulture or closely related field and two years' of horti- <br />cultural experience or any combination of training and experience which provides the <br />following knowledge and abilities: <br /> <br />Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques of horticulture.' A good <br />knowledge of: arboriculture; nursery operations; landscape maintenance practices and <br />problems; oceupstional hazards and safety precautions; proper use of tools, equipment <br />and materials; training methods and techniques; and principles and techniques of super- <br />vision, Ability to; plan, organize and supervise the work of others; develop and <br />administer an in-service training program and conduct training courses in horticultural <br />and arboricultrual methods and techniques; prepare reports and budget estimates; and <br />establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates <br />and the general public. <br /> <br /> <br />
