£1TY OF SANTA ANA <br /> <br />FIIfE SAFETY SPECIALIST <br /> <br />DEFINITION <br /> <br />l~der general supervision, performs responsible technical fire safety inspection and <br />enforc~ent work of moderate difficulty and complexity. <br /> <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Inspects commercial and selected industrial buildings and facilities and places of public <br />assembly to determine compliance with State and local fire and life safety codes; inspects <br />selected operations, devices and equipment requiring the inspection or approval of the <br />fire department; enforces fire safety code provisions of s limited technical and complex <br />nature; issues notices, warnings and citations; keeps up-to-date records of inspections <br />and w~ites detailed inspection reports; participates in the public information/education <br />activities of the fire safety bureau including giving talks and demonstrations for school <br />children end other groups and preparing pamphlets, brochures and other informational/ <br />educational m~tertsla; collects, analyzes and evaluates data and prepares comprehensive <br />reports; in a training capacity, assists in performing difficult, technical inspections <br />requiring the application of a working knowledge of chemistry and physics to identify <br />and abate fire and life safety hazards; as knowledge and abilities are gained through <br />training and experience, increasingly independent action is expected and required in <br />the performance of fire safety inspection and enforcement work; may assist in the <br />training and supervision of subordinate, entry-level personnel; writes correspondence <br />and performs other related duties as required. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS <br /> <br />This iS the first of several classes in the fire safety education and inspection series <br />of classes which requires prior training and experience in the occupational field. <br />Employment at this level is generally attained through promotional examination from <br />the entry-level class of Fire Safety Assistant. <br /> <br />RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS <br /> <br />F-~ucation equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by college-level courses <br />in Fundamentals of Fire Prevention, Fire Protection Equipment and Systems or closely <br />related course work; and one year experience in fire safety education/inspection work <br />or any combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, <br />skills and abilities: <br /> <br />Basic knowledge of: principles and practices of fire safety education, inspection and <br />enforcement work; state and local fire and life safety laws; common fire safe~y hazards; <br />fire detection and extinguishing systems and equipment; organization and functions of a <br />municipal fire department; public relations techniques. Ability to: understand and <br />interpret fire safety code provision of limited complexity; detect common fire hazards <br />and code violations and determine appropriate safety measures; write detailed inspection <br />reports; express ideas clearly and concisely orally and in writing; speak in front of <br />audiences; and use good tact and Judgement in contacts with public. <br /> <br />SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS <br /> <br />Possession of valid California driver's license and willingness to work any shift, <br />including rotating shifts, if necessary. NOTE: Some positions may require bilingual <br />capability in Spanish and English. <br /> <br /> <br />
