C~TY O~ SANTA <br /> <br />FIRE SAFETY ASSISTANT <br /> <br />DBF~NITION <br /> <br />Under ~mediate supervision, participates fm an on-the-job training progr~ and learns, <br />~,throuEh Job experience supplemented by schooling in related vocational subjects, to per- <br /> for~ · variety of fire safety education, inspection and enforcement duties. <br /> <br />Learns local and state fire and life safety codes, inspection and enforcement techniques <br />and procedures, and a wide variety of technical data in the areas of buildinE construc- <br />tion and design, fire extinguishing equipment, and fire alan systems and devices; <br />participates in th~ public information/education activities of the bureau including <br />conducting fire safety education programs for school children and other groups; conducts <br />fire safety surveys and inspections of residential and coumercial properties to locate <br />and identify existing or potential fire safety problems and recommend appropriate safety <br />measures including actions required to correct hazardous conditions, installation of <br />fire detection devices, and planning of fire escape routes; periods selected code <br />enforcement ~rk including issuance of violation warnings and cltstiona; interprets and <br />explains routine, non-technical provisions of fire safety codes; issues and explains <br />applications for per. its; keeps up-to-date records of inspections and ~rites detailed <br />inspection reports; prepares routine correspondence and assists in the preparation and <br />distribution of public information/education materials; may perform special sur~eys and <br />studies; attends required supplemental instructional classes to maintain employment <br />status and may need to complete general educational requirements on o~n t~e to prepare <br />for occupational advancement ~rlthin specified time limits; and per£ot-ms other related <br />duties as required. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS <br /> <br />This is an entry-level classification designed to provide the opportunity for practical <br />experience and preparation for a career in fire safety service. Employees in this class <br />are expected to qualify for pro~otiona! examination to the next highest class in the <br />series within specified time lt~ts. <br /> <br />P, ECOMMENDED MINIMU~ QUALIFICATIONS <br /> <br />Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and so~e experience <br />involving direct public contact or any co~bination or training and experience ~hich <br />provides the following skills and abilities. <br /> <br />Ability to: write routine correspondence, detailed reports and keep records; deal and <br />co~unicate effectively vith people, sometimes under complex situations; acquire rapidly <br />~orkinE knowledge of fire prevention codes and interpret them in simple ~ords; under- <br />stand procedures and devices.used in various kinds of construction; and follo~ ~ritten <br />and oral instrnctions. <br /> <br />S?~CL~ P~Ul~E~NTg <br /> <br />~ossession of a valid California driver's license and willingness to work any shift, <br />includinl rotatint a~ifta, if ~eeded. <br /> <br /> <br />
