RESOLUTION NUMBER 79-9 <br />RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL <br />OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA <br />HONORING MRS. WESTON WALKER <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br />WHEREAS, <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />it is the desire and intent of the City Council <br />of the City of Santa Ana to recognize individuals <br />who have significantly improved the quality of <br />life for the citizens of Santa Ana; and <br /> <br />Mrs. Weston Walker is well known and highly <br />esteemed by her admirers and appreciators in <br />Santa Ana, as well as the whole of Southern <br />California; and <br /> <br />Mrs. Weston Walker is a graduate of Santa Ana <br />elementary and secondary schools, as well as <br />Santa Ana College; and <br /> <br />Mrs. Weston Walker began her recorded community <br />efforts in 1948 by founding the Orange County <br />District of "California Garden Clubs, Incorporated", <br />serving as a member of the State board that year, <br />and later serving as President statewide, and <br />editor of the organization's magazine for two years; <br />and <br /> <br />in 1950 Mrs. Weston Walker founded the "Orange <br />County Herb Society"; and <br /> <br />that same year Mrs. Weston Walker founded the <br />"Santa Ana Junior Gardeners Club"; and <br /> <br />in 1955 Mrs. Weston Walker succeeded in having the <br />City of Santa Ana adopt the Chinese Hibiscus as <br />the official City flower, Santa Ana thus being the <br />first city in Orange County to adopt a city flower; <br />and <br /> <br />the following year Mrs. Weston Walker succeeded <br />again by encouraging the City of Santa Ana to adopt <br />an official City tree, the Blue Flowering Jacaranda; <br />and <br /> <br />Mrs. Weston Walker served as Chairperson for the <br />Orange County Memorial Garden, a living memorial <br />to the former Santa Ana Army Air Base; and <br /> <br />Mrs. Weston Walker succeeded in convincing the City <br />of Santa Ana to designate itself in 1964 as a bird <br />sanctuary, being the first city of the eleven now <br />designated in the County to do so; and <br /> <br />Mrs. Weston Walker was named 1965 "Woman of the <br />Year" by "The California Garden Clubs, Incorporated"; <br />and <br /> <br />in 1967 Mrs. Weston Walker organized and founded <br />LISA ("Let's Improve Santa Ana") as a program to <br />improve the visual and social quality of life in <br />Santa Ana; and <br /> <br />Mrs. Weston Walker served as Civic Beautification <br />Chairperson for the California Bicentennial Commit- <br />tee of Orange County; and <br /> <br /> <br />
