• Referrals from community partners including: the Orange County <br />Probation Department, the Santa Ana WORK Center, Centennial <br />Education Center, and others. <br />Eligibility is determined through an application process. Program participants at <br />TSJ Tech are required to completed an application for employment and provide <br />original copies of right to work documents. The minimum requirements for <br />enrollment are as follows: <br />• Must be between the ages of 18 -28 years of age <br />• Possess valid right to work documents <br />• Have the ability to speak, read, and write English at an intermediate level <br />2. Intake /Assessment: An assessment of each student takes place prior to training at <br />TSJ Tech. Student apprentices are interviewed by a staff member and complete a <br />math assessment exam which determines whether a student is below a 6`h grade <br />math proficiency level. Program math components are adjusted to meet the <br />student apprentices math needs. <br />Case Management: Taller San Jose attributes its success at reaching and retaining <br />Santa Ana's undereducated and unskilled youth to a holistic, relational approach <br />to education and training. The philosophy of the program calls for high <br />interaction between staff and student apprentices. Staff focus on making warm <br />and supportive contacts with student apprentices from the first phone <br />contact /walk -in, through orientation sessions and throughout the first critical <br />weeks of the student's participation. <br />TSJ Tech links each student with an adult staff mentor within one week of <br />enrollment in job- training. The mentors assess individual student risk factors, <br />oversee attendance, student performance and have long -term responsibility for the <br />student- apprentices assigned to them. Regular attendance, punctuality, drug -free <br />behavior, a positive attitude and appropriate dress are viewed as job -ready <br />behaviors and emphasized on a daily basis. <br />In addition, TSJ Tech graduates work with the Career Center staff at Taller San <br />Jose to find full -time employment and enter the workforce and/or enroll in <br />continuing education coursework after completing training. <br />4. Program Services: TSJ Tech provides an intensive, multi -level job training <br />program to prepare young adults to enter the workforce in the areas of general <br />building repair, carpentry and weatherization. Student apprentices who <br />successfully complete their job- training at TSJ Tech receive certification as a pre - <br />apprentice in the construction trades. <br />Placement in Jobs or Continuing Education: TSJ Tech has a strong program <br />linking student apprentices to employment through job preparation workshops, <br />participation in job fairs, resume preparation, referrals and job coaching.
