Kennedy Elementary School <br />Weed & Seed Safe Haven Site <br />Student and Parent Science -Based Learning Activities <br />Activities: <br />During the period of June 1" 2001 through December 31, 2001, staff members of Santa Ana <br />Unified School District will be performing the following activities at John F. Kennedy Elementary <br />School after school, Saturdays and during evening hours: <br />• Hands -on Science experiments with emphasis on practical activities relevant to the students' <br />lives <br />• Bilingual Family Science Nights following the guidelines and training from the Family Science <br />Handbook <br />• Painting of a Sundial and the Solar System on the playground blacktop for daily reinforcement <br />of Earth Science during recess periods <br />■ Planting and maintenance of existing school garden to develop appreciation for life sciences <br />■ Purchase and usage of both microscopes and telescopes to highlight the inner and outer worlds <br />around us <br />■ Supplemental teacher training (release days to be paid through Eisenhower Funds) in Science <br />strands. <br />■ Science and Health activities taught through physical education (respiration, pulse, body <br />temperature, nutrition and musculo- skeletal structure. <br />■ Experiments incorporating Magnetism and Electricity <br />■ School Site Science Fair and Showcase in Multi- Purpose Room with a "Star Night" theme <br />focused on Astronomy <br />■ Saturday Science & ELD activities using the existing CITAS (Ciencias, Ingles & Tecnologia en <br />la Academia de los SSbados) model for English acquisition through Science <br />■ Family Field Trips to Discovery Science Center, La Brea Tar Pits, Tucker Wildlife <br />Conservatory, Santa Ana College Planetarium, etc. and presentations to students/parents in <br />school Multi- Purpose Room <br />Budget: <br />Expenditures to implement the above learning activities will be divided into two categories — <br />personnel and supplies. <br />Activity or Item <br />Purpose <br />Cost (s) <br />Average hourly salary for certificated staff <br />members ($45 ) @ 21 hours weekly x 27 weeks <br />Planning and instruction of science <br />lessons and related activities <br />$25,515.00 <br />Benefits <br />3% of sal <br />$765.45 <br />Transportation <br />Family Field Trips <br />$4,200.00 <br />Admission Costs <br />Museums/Exhibitions <br />$2,950.00 <br />Science Presentations /Simulations <br />On -site scientists share their career <br />expertise (Career Week <br />$1,200. <br />6 Telescopes <br />Family Science /Science Fair <br />$2,300.00 <br />Miscellaneous Science Equipment (Beakers, <br />Microscopes, stethoscopes, thermometers, <br />magnifying glasses, foil, batteries, wire, <br />balloons, straws, clay, etc. <br />Science Instruction <br />$3,069.55 <br />TOTAL <br />$40,000. <br />
