COMMENTS <br />• Noted that the Police Department is trying to help the families of <br />Camp Pendleton have a special Easter while their spouses or <br />family members are serving in the military; they are attempting to <br />prepare Easter Baskets containing basic household supplies. The <br />Baskets will be delivered to the families a few days prior to Easter; <br />anyone interested in participating can contact the Police <br />Department by April 10th <br />• Asked the Council to adjourn in memory of Donald J. McLaughlin, <br />owner of Clark Dye Hardware <br />• Asked the Council to adjourn in memory of Randall (Randy) Smith, <br />who was a prominent county lobbyist born in Santa Ana, attended <br />Santa Ana Junior College, where he was elected student -body <br />president, and graduated in 1970 from California State College, <br />Fullerton with a bachelor's degree in political science; he is <br />survived by his wife and three grown children <br />Councilmember Alvarez: <br />• Noted that this year, seven pedestrian fatalities have occurred in <br />Santa Ana through March, as compared to six fatalities in all of <br />2002. She reported that there was a recent fatality in the Artesia- <br />Pilar neighborhood involving an individual who was working on the <br />traffic plans for Artesia-Pilar. Mr. Russell Bushee helped develop <br />signs for the neighborhood warning drivers to "Keep Kids Alive, <br />Drive 25"; she asked parents and drivers to be aware of and <br />prepared for the danger of pedestrian accidents <br />• Asked the Council to adjourn in memory of Russell Bushee <br />• Announced that she will be. supporting a bill sponsored by <br />Assemblyman Lou Correa relative to the Santa Ana Conservancy, <br />and that she and Councilmember Bist are drafting a letter in <br />support of this measure <br />• Congratulated El Sol School on their success and announced that <br />there will be a fund raising event for the school on May 2, 2003 in <br />the Artists Village <br />• Announced that the 2003 Mariachi Festival would be held at Santa <br />Ana Stadium on May 10, 2003; she thanked the Parks and <br />Recreation staff committee, the Friends of Parks and Recreation, <br />and the community groups working on this project; she announced <br />that tickets for this event are on sale and will be $15 for adults, $7 <br />for youth (7-12). Tickets for children 6 and under are free <br />Noted that she and Councilmember Bist went on the Santa Ana <br />Chamber of Commerce sponsored trip to China; she reported that <br />the trip was very successful and a lot of fun <br />CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 137 APRIL 7, 2003 <br />
