WITH SAME MEMBERS PRESENT; <br />COUNCILMEMBER CHRISTY LEFT THE MEETING AT 7:38 P.M. <br />WORK STUDY SESSION <br />WS.A Santa Ana Health and Fitness Task Force — Parks, Recreation & <br />Community Services <br />This presentation was made by Gerardo Mouet, Executive Director, Parks, <br />Recreation and Community Services Agency, Kristen Thompson, <br />Executive Director, Community Services of the YMCA of Orange County, <br />and Dean Roberta Rikli, College of Health & Human Development, <br />California State University, Fullerton. Highlights of this presentation are as <br />follows: <br />• The level of physical activity and the food choices people make has <br />created a public health crisis in our community <br />■ Nearly 100 million Americans or 65% of the population are overweight <br />or obese <br />■ Since 1980, the total number of overweight and obese Americans has <br />doubled <br />• Health care cost 37% more for obese people <br />• In the last decade there was a 50% increase in diabetes <br />■ Overweight children are more likely to become overweight adults and <br />face a series of life threatening conditions <br />■ Obesity rates are at an epidemic level <br />■ This condition is responsible for at least 400,000 preventable deaths <br />each year, second only to tobacco use <br />■ 19% of Caucasians and 38% of Latinos report having no time for <br />physical activity <br />■ In the state, 25.5% of children are overweight; in Santa Ana, that rate <br />is 36.1 % and 42.7% are considered unfit <br />• Only 11% of Santa Ana's school age children passed the state's <br />fitness test <br />■ In the fall of 2003, Santa Ana was one of 25 cities nationwide that <br />received a $200,000 grant and technical assistance from the Robert <br />Wood Johnson Foundation to help make cities more conducive to daily <br />physical activity <br />CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 153 APRIL 18, 2005 <br />
