WORK STUDY SESSION <br />• The YMCA of Orange County is the lead Agency (Active Living in <br />Santa Ana (ALISA)) <br />• Other partners include the City, School District, County Health Care <br />Agency, California State University, Fullerton, University of California, <br />Irvine, and various community based non-profit organizations <br />■ Framework for obesity prevention: individual in home setting; schools <br />and workplace; healthcare system; food supply; urban design; <br />transportation systems; and, media <br />• Center for the Prevention of Childhood Obesity, California State <br />University, Fullerton is supported in part by federal appropriations <br />funding from Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez <br />■ Center goals include; working with schools and communities in <br />developing new strategies to promote children's health and reduce <br />obesity; stimulating and supporting faculty research on children's <br />health,; providing additional internship opportunities for students, <br />where they can learn while doing as they assist with community <br />programs and faculty research ; evaluating and influencing policies that <br />affect children's physical activity and nutrition <br />• Center projects include: <br />• Evaluation of physical activity and healthy eating programs and <br />Latina Mother's influence on preschooler's nutrition <br />• School nurse "Healthy Lifestyles" referral program <br />• Community based: "Healthy Lifestyles" intervention for <br />underserved "at risk" youth <br />• Safe and Active Living United Districts (SALUD) Internship <br />support <br />• Self-esteem and body image in overweight teenagers; cultural <br />difference and influences <br />■ Santa Ana Health and Fitness Task Force was created by the Parks <br />and Recreation Board on March 23, 2005 and Park Commissioner <br />Robin Christenson was selected as Chairperson <br />■ Additional members on the Task Force will be needed <br />■ Nominations for the Mayor's Fitness Award will be facilitated by the <br />Task Force <br />■ A forum for SALUD will be sponsored by the Task Force — each district <br />will focus on healthy, safe, and fit neighborhood centered activities <br />• The May, 2006 Celebrate Santa Ana event will focus on Santa Ana <br />Health and Fitness <br />COMMENTS <br />CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 154 APRIL 18, 2005 <br />
