2.13.1 DIMS® Software Solution
Linear Systems created DIMS (Digital Image Management System) specifically for the law enforcement
market. DIMS® is an agency's Policy and Procedure and Chain of Custody Rglky implemented through
software. DIMS® is a hardware and software system available for PC based computers with a PCMCIA
reader, utilizing Windows 95198, Windows 2000, or Windows XP. The objective of DIMS® was to design
and create a simple and powerful application for:
• Acquisition of images from digital cameras and other input devices
• Providing a consistent front-end application for multiple camera systems
• Supporting current and future digital input devices to reduce training cost
• Saving secure image files for evidence to assure image integrity and authenticity
• Automatic clearing of digital media card to eliminate accidental distribution of sensitive files
• Renaming of images to eliminate possible overwriting of images
• Renaming of files to allow tracking of images by year, month, and day
• Making image files read only to eliminate accidental deletion or modification
• Create JPEG files for viewing with secure RAW files into the same directory for case files
• Redundant files on multiple drives to eliminate loss due to drive failure or defective media
• Archiving image files to floppy, Zip, Jazz, CD, or hard drive
• Password protection configuration setup and file access
• Bio -metric fingerprint security for system access
• Bio -metric fingerprint security for directory access
• Bio -metric fingerprint tracking for image downloads
• Non-destructive enhancement of images for printing or viewing without saving
• Identification of individual workstations for input tracking to server download or image access
2.13.1 System Security
The complete line of Linear DIMS® computer systems, utilizing the Linear DIMS® software and hardware
package, offer a fully redundant image management solution. DIMS® software automatically provides
multiple levels of file security, access control, redundancy, and archive. DIMS® Digital Asset Management
Solution hardware is capable of providing multiple levels of redundancy, security, processing power,
network bandwidth, and user defined workflow. Every law enforcement agency requires a zero fault
tolerance for loss of digital evidence but large law enforcement agencies have a far more stringent
requirement for automation, storages and speed due to the sheer volume of data that must be stored and
archived. Most large agencies will require mass storage capability in excess of twenty Terabytes (20TB)
per year for just the case files, not including a redundant archive. This also does not include other assets,
such as forensic video, that could possibly again double the capacity required. This volume of data needs
to be available as on-line or near -line storage for a minimum of one (1) year. The DIMS® PDD Mass
Storage Solutions are designed for implementation when fast access to extremely large volumes of data are
required, where Policies and Procedures mandate storage of digital evidence on WORM (write once read
many) storage media, and where reliability and security is critical. Large capacity streaming tape backup
units offer on demand or scheduled backup of working data and program files. DIMS® software includes
DVD authoring and CD writing for archive off-line storage or distribution of digital case file evidence
using the internal DVD and CD writers in all DIMS® Workstations. Every DIMS® Workstation System has
RAID 1 (mirrored) hard drives dedicated to secure image storage and all hard drives are high speed RAID
compliant drives installed in removable subsystems for additional security (remove and lock in safe) and
immediate exchange for interchange between redundant workstations or replacement. Together, DIMS('
integrated hardware and software solutions provide an engineered system from a single source that is a
highly secure, redundant, and cost effective archive solution for long term storage of digital assets and
digital evidence.
See: 3.1k System Components
Linear Systems ConfiidemW Page 86 of 66
Santa Nu PD ft)NM1060W5 doc
