<br />ARTICLE V <br /> <br />5.0 ASSIGNMENT AND OTHER PAY ADDITIVES <br /> <br />5.1 Bilingual Pay. An employee who is assigned by the Fire <br />Chief or his designee to a position requiring bilingual <br />capability in both English and either Spanish, Vietnamese or <br />other languages designated by the City Manager, will be paid <br />a monthly assignment pay differential in accordance with the <br />criteria and amounts set forth below: <br /> <br />A. Certification by the Executive Director of Personnel <br />Services as having satisfactorily demonstrated <br />conversational fluency in both languages for any <br />position requiring bilingual capability. <br /> <br />B. Positions for which the Fire Chief has determined that <br />bilingual proficiency is essential to carry out duties <br />and responsibilities of a critical and/or emergency <br />nature without ready access to backup assistance, or <br />positions where bilingual public contact is a major and <br />essential element of the work being performed, will be <br />designated as Primary Bilingual Assignments. A <br />qualified incumbent of such position will be paid a <br />monthly differential of one hundred fifty dollars <br />($150) above his or her then current base monthly <br />salary step. <br /> <br />During the term of this Agreement, the City agrees that <br />all positions assigned to the class of Fire Battalion <br />Chief shall be considered to be Primary Bilingual <br />Assignments. <br /> <br />C. Qualified employees in the classes of Deputy Fire Chief, <br />Fire Marshal, or Fire Communications Manager who are <br />assigned to positions involving the regular and <br />frequent use of bilingual skill in both English and <br />either Spanish, Vietnamese or other language designated <br />by the City Manager will be paid a monthly pay <br />differential of forty dollars ($40) above his or her <br />then current base monthly salary step. Incumbents in <br />those positions where bilingual proficiency is <br />essential to the performance of duties and <br />responsibilities of a critical and/or emergency nature, <br />or of positions where bilingual public contact is a <br /> <br />19 <br />
