<br />About the Organization <br /> <br />Description of Proposer <br />Taller San Jose (St. Joseph's Workshop) is a non-profit, faith-based organization whose sole <br />purpose is to work with undereducated and unskilled young adults, Since 1995, TSJ has worked <br />with more than 3,000 young adults in Santa Ana and the surrounding communities, TSJ is a <br />multi-service program providing: a high school diploma program, , mentoring and counseling <br />services, life skills, job-preparation, job-placement and job coaching, bus passes and childcare <br />support as well as vocational programs in for construction, information technology and <br />convalescent nurses assistant. <br /> <br />Ihe typical TSJ student shares seven of the following characteristics: <br /> <br />. Is Latino <br />. Is between the ages of 18-28 <br />. Has not completed high school <br />. Is a parent <br />. Speaks both English and Spanish <br />. Lives in over-crowded housing <br />. Is unemployed or underemployed <br />. Has been incarcerated or has been involved in gangs, drugs, or crime <br /> <br />ISJ developed seven core goals for out-of-school youth and all program components work <br />toward helping students to achieve these ends, Within the period of one year, students are asked <br />to complete five of the following objectives: <br /> <br />. Obtain a GED or complete a diploma program <br />. Master basic computers skills <br />. Attain a driver's license <br />. Open a bank account and use it <br />. Stay crime free for a minimum of one year <br />. Register to vote <br />. Get a job that pays above minimum wage <br /> <br />IS] serves as a structured and supportive environment in the center of the city for young people <br />who are caught in the cycle of poverty and need further training to become financially <br />independent. Youth are empowered to become self-reliant, productive adults within one year of <br />their enrollment. <br /> <br />Over the last ten year, Taller San Jose has been recognized for its work with the hardest to serve <br />youth and young adults, The program was awarded the Audrey Nelson Award as one of six <br />programs in the country noted for creative use of Community Development Funding, Likewise, <br />the Pew Charitable Trust named TSJ as one of 19 programs in the country that it has chosen to <br />research and study, This research proj ect, Wanted: Solutions for America, has identified <br />programs which creatively address society's most critical issues, <br /> <br />7 <br />
