Hotels throughout Southern California change names frequently. If you can not
find the hotel, check with dispatch; but use your map book first before you take up
radio and dispatch time.
If you have a Los Angeles and Orange County Book always make sure you are
checking in the right section_ The combined book is two separate books in one. It
is a common error to think you are looking in the Orange County section and
actually be looking at the Los Angeles section.
The map book shows the entire County. Because no boundary is at the exact end of
a page the map book will continue to show every street and item for the page even
if it goes into another county. This is called a "shared page" as the county. For
example, although Knotts Berry Farm is in Buena Park in Orange County, it's a
shared page that also contains part of Los Angeles County. Because of this you
will find Knotts listed in the points of interest section of the Los Angeles section as
well. In the Orange County book you will find Camp Pendleton listed even though
it is in San Diego County. You will not find Disneyland in L.A.book since it is not
a shared page in both.
The Thomas Bros. Guide is your master tool. It is essential to a professional job.
You MUST have this with you at all times. NO EXCUSES.
No one can know all of Southern California, and you will find your passengers
understand this limitation. Route your trip before you take off Do not route your
trip with the meter on. Do not ft to read a may book and drive
As you can see, the Thomas Guide is a thorough and complex tool. Study the use
of it, practice looking up intersections, buildings, hotels etc. Become intimately
familiar with each section and how to use them.
As you begin your career of driving a cab look up the more famous and most
requested locations so as to memorize what you can. For example; Disneyland,
Universal Studios, Magic Mountain, Dodger Stadium, Edison Field, The Pond, the
Forum, LAX, Disney Studios, John Wayne and Burbank airports etc. Know how to
get to areas such as Santa Monica, Newport Beach, Downtown LA, Pasadena, San
Juan Capistrano, "Old Town" in L.A., Chinatown, Koreatown, Little Saigon, Little
Tokyo, etc.
The proper use of this tool will save time and frustration, both yours and your
customer's. It will make you money and earn repeat business. Put in the extra
effort to know the Thomas Bros. Guide and how to use it properly. Keep a current
copy, no older than three years old. Remember, you are now a professional, behave
like one and use the tools of the professional.
12
