guy" change his driving habits, but there is a way for you and your passenger to
survive and for your passenger to arrive at his or her destination safe and sound. The
person who told you that you were a good driver is the same person who said you
were a great lover... YOU. Commit to raising your driving standards and skills.
You will drive ten times as many miles each day as the average commuter.
You will be driving more miles in one week behind the wheel of an A Taxi Cab than
most people drive in five months in their personal vehicles. You'll drive more miles
in three months in your cab than most people drive in a year in their personal
vehicles. How well you drive defensively will directly determine many things.
Among them, are you in control of yourself and your cab? Are you at the mercy of
other inattentive drivers around you?
Left turns .... A major force in serious accident injuries and death. Are you in
control? Is the approaching traffic clear? That car in front of you, is he going to stop
half way through the left turn leaving you in the line of fire of oncoming traffic? Do
you have enough distance between you and oncoming traffic to safely make that turn,
or is a pedestrian going to enter the crosswalk and leave you in the line of fire of
oncoming traffic? A Taxi Cab's policy requires you make a left turn only when both
of the following apply. I.On major thoroughfares, there must be a dedicated left turn
lane and; 2. There is no oncoming traffic. Example: you're facing three lanes of
oncoming traffic. Two lanes stop and wave you on. Do not turn. Allow all oncoming
traffic to pass before you turn. Remember you can not see that third lane of traffic
clearly. Use hand signals with directional.
EXCESS SPEED... how much has been said over the years about excessive speed.
What is excessive speed? Any speed is excessive speed if you are driving too fast for
the road conditions. Example: The "posted " speed limit is 35 and there is heavy
traffic. If you are on your brakes constantly, 20 mph is excessive speed. Obviously 35
mph is not a safe speed for the conditions.
When it is raining reduce your speed! The roadways are slick. A pool of water
thinner than a newspaper is enough to lift a car off the surface and cause
hydroplaning. If it's posted 35 mph, try 25 mph, or a speed that is safe for the
conditions, the keywords here are:
SAFE FOR THE CONDITIONS!
FOLLOWING TOO CLOSE.. this is extremely dangerous! Dangerous to you're
future lease at A Taxi Cab, dangerous to your passenger's safety and dangerous to
thousands of drivers a year who think they can "push the guy in from of them ". If
they just get a little closer to that "slow poke "ahead of them.
22
