The above guidelines are illustrative and not exhaustive. The contents of the <br />group sessions will, as mentioned, cover a broad range of topics. Each <br />subsection below includes a brief proposed syllabus for each of the proposed <br />workshops. <br />Core Course tt1: The FUERZAS lMrnas l'rngram: 4n (lvm,~i~~w <br />Course Description -This introductory workshop will serve as an orientation for the youth to the WIA <br />program and will define the purpose of the program, goals and objectives, strategies, intake <br />rocesses, and the ro ram com onents. <br />Course Objectives -After completing this session, each participant will be able to: list benefts that will <br />accrue to them and their families from their participation in FUERZAS t1NIDAS; identify anticipated <br />barriers to their full participation; articulate factors that led to their joblessness or dropout; outline their <br />fears and apprehensions regarding their future; complete all input and additional assessments for <br />their artici ation; and rovide aself-assessment of the su ort needed. <br />Course Orientation - This frst workshop will be highly interactive. The objective of CHCADA's staff will <br />be that of eneratin excitement about the ro ram. <br />Course Activities -Introductions; share brief bios; IntakelAssessment; review print materials and <br />com onents of the ro ram; si n contract between outh and CHCADA's FUERZAS UNIDAS staff. <br />Core Course #2: That Thing Called Education: Education Readiness and <br />Vocational Needs <br />Course Description -This course is designed to inform the participants regarding the specific role that <br />education plays or can play in their lives; to encourage youth to examine their interpersonal <br />relationships with their education and to identify factors in the educational environment that may <br />contribute to their roblems. <br />Course Objectives -After completing this session, each participant will be able to: compare and <br />contrast the differences in income and earnings of persons by educational level; the differences in <br />marriage and divorce rates; the differences in mortality and morbidity; the differences in rates of <br />reported happiness and life satisfaction; and other differences in life outcomes -all by educational <br />level. The youth will be able to extract from within themselves their "true" feelings about education <br />and identify and describe the experience within the educational environment that helped shape these <br />feelings They will be able to describe what they feel about their future. Participants will write a <br />Personal Education Plan that outlines their educational objectives and how these will be achieved; <br />collect applications and catalogs so that they can begin learning the application process; and learn to <br />disassociate education from their articular ex eriences at their schools. <br />Course Activities - CHCADA will invite a Professor of Labor Economics or a Human Resources <br />Manager to give a presentation on the benefits of investing in human capital. The objective of this <br />activity is that of convincing the youth that independently of what they may think of school, education <br />is an instrument of change, growth, and improvement. The areas covered in this workshop will also <br />be covered with the youth on an individualized basis. CHCADA will ensure that all participants are <br />alwa s treated like "ro alt " so that their alread -fra ileseIf-esteem will be siren thened. <br />Core Course #3: Interpersonal Skills: Improving Family Skills <br />Course Description -Family interaction is a primary interpersonal relationship and the participant <br />cannot truly advance his/her individual status without the application of therapeutic assistance to the <br />whole of his/her family. The purpose of this course is that of allowing family members to paint out to <br />each other behaviors that have caused them pain. <br />22 <br />
