<br />SANTA ANA CITY COUNCIL COMMITTEE <br />PUBLIC SAFETY <br />Minutes of Meeting <br />May 9, 2005 <br /> <br />CALL TO ORDER <br />The meeting was convened at 6:05 p.m. in City Hall, 20 Civic Center Plaza, 8th <br />Floor, Room 831, Santa Ana, California. <br /> <br />ATTENDANCE <br />Councilmembers present: Alberta Christy, Claudia Alvarez and Carlos <br />Bustamante. <br /> <br />Staff present: City Manager David Ream, Assistant City Attorney Paula <br />Coleman, Police Chief Paul Walters, Fire Chief Phil Garcia, Fire Marshal Lori <br />Smith, Lts. Alan Caddell and David Valentin, and Sgt. Lorenzo Carrillo. <br /> <br />SUMMARY OF DISCUSSIONS <br /> <br />1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br />Approved Minutes of the March 28, 2005 meeting. <br /> <br />2. PROPOSED FIREWORKS ORDINANCE <br />Chief Garcia reported that the proposed ordinance would be reconsidered <br />after the 4th of July for the 2006 season. Fire Marshal Smith handed out <br />the results of the fireworks booth lottery and will keep the committee <br />updated on the status of the final booth counts. She also stated that the <br />educational campaign will be under way by mid May and that they are <br />scheduled to speak with schools, PTAs and neighborhood groups <br />concerning fireworks rules and regulations. <br /> <br />3. COMMUNITY RELATIONS TEAM UPDATE <br />Sgt. Carrillo stated that the Community Relations Team (CRT) has been <br />very successful in the projects they have participated in so far and <br />reviewed some of the more recent ones. Lt. Valentin will also be working <br />with Sgt. Carrillo and the CRT. <br /> <br />4. PROBLEM ORIENTED POLICING PROJECTS <br />Lt. Caddell distributed information and explained the Problem Oriented <br />Policing and Code Enforcement strategies. He reviewed how the Police <br />Department works with Code Enforcement to determine the underlying <br />cause of crime in a specific location and bring in the tools necessary to <br />address the issues of disorder. <br />
