<br />AQpendix C <br /> <br />Glossary of Terms <br /> <br />Architectural and Planning Terms <br /> <br />Preservation - Preservation is defined as the act or process of applying measures necessary <br />to sustain the existing form, integrity, and materials of a historic property. Work, including <br />preliminary measures to protect and stabilize the property, generally focuses upon the ongoing <br />maintenance and repair of historic materials and features rather than extensive replacement and <br />new construction. New exterior additions are not within the scope of this treatment; however, <br />the limited and sensitive upgrading of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and other <br />code required work to make properties functional is appropriate within a preservation project. <br /> <br />Rehabilitation - Rehabilitation is defined as the act or process of making possible a compatible <br />use for a property through repair, alterations, and additions while preserving those portions or <br />features which convey its historical, cultural, or architectural values. <br /> <br />Arch - A curved structure supporting its weight over an open space such as a door or window. <br /> <br />Awning - A fixed cover, typically comprised of cloth over a metal armature, that is placed over <br />windows or building openings as protection from the sun and rain. <br /> <br />Baluster - The upright portion of the row of supports for a porch railing. <br /> <br />Bay Window - A window projecting outward from the main wall of a building. <br /> <br />Beveled Glass - Glass with a decorative edge cut on a slope to give the pane a faceted <br />appearance. <br /> <br />Beveled Siding - A type of wood cladding characterized by beveled overlapping boards with <br />rabbeted edges. <br /> <br />Belvedere - A rooftop pavilion from which a vista can be enjoyed. <br /> <br />Board and Batten - Vertical siding composed of wide boards that do not overlap and narrow <br />strips, or battens, nailed over the spaces between the boards. <br /> <br />Canopy - A fixed, roof-like covering that extends from the building as protection form the sun <br />and rain. <br /> <br />Cantilever - A projecting overhang or beam supported only at one end. <br /> <br />Casement Window - A window that opens on hinges fixed to its vertical side. <br /> <br />Chamfer - A 90 degree corner cut to reduce it to two 45 degree edges.
