<br />Historic District - A geographically defined area possessing a significant concentration or <br />continuity of landmarks, improvements, or landscape features united by historic events or by <br />physical development. It may have within its boundaries noncontributing buildings or other <br />structures that, while not of such historic and/or architectural significance to be designated as <br />landmarks, nevertheless contribute to the overall visual character of the district. <br /> <br />Hopper Window - A triangular, bottom-hinged window sash that tilts inward and rests at an <br />angle when opened; air enters the room at the top of the sash. <br /> <br />Joist - Any small timber laid horizontally to support a floor or cling. <br /> <br />Infill - A newly constructed building within an existing development area. <br /> <br />Leaded Glass Window - A window with glass held in a sash by lead cames; types include art <br />glass, stained glass. <br /> <br />Light - A windowpane. <br /> <br />Lot - A parcel of land, in single or joint ownership, and occupied or to be occupied by main <br />building and accessory buildings, or by a dwelling group and its accessory buildings, together <br />with such open spaces and having its principal frontage on a street, road, highway or waterway. <br /> <br />Mansard - A roof with two slopes on each side, the lower slope being much steeper, frequently <br />used to add an upper story. <br /> <br />Masonry - Wall construction of such materials as stone, brick, and adobe. <br /> <br />Moulding (Molding) - A continuous decorative band that serves as an ornamental device on <br />both the interior and exterior of buildings. Mouldings may also serve a functional purpose by <br />obscuring the joint formed when two surfaces or materials meet. Synonym: Molding. <br /> <br />Mullion - The divisional pieces in a multi-paned window. <br /> <br />Muntin - A small, slender wood or metal member which separates the panes of glass in a <br />window. <br /> <br />Palladian Window - A three-part window with a top-arched center window and long, narrow <br />rectangular windows on either side. <br /> <br />Parapet - The part of a wall which rises above the edge of a roof. <br /> <br />Pilaster - A column attached to a wall or pier. <br /> <br />Pitch - The slope of a roof expressed in terms of ratio of height to span. <br /> <br />Porch - A covered entrance or semi enclosed space projecting from the far;:ade of a building, <br />may be open sided or screened. <br /> <br />64 <br /> <br />{ O\"'- { "I <br />
