NO. 06-144) <br /> <br />CONTINUED TO <br /> <br />FILE NUMBER <br /> <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br /> <br />Award a contract to Long Beach BMW for the purchase of 11 police equipped <br />motorcycles in the amount of $245,408.97; and increase the aggregate limit <br />for miscellaneous parts and repairs in an amount not to exceed $20,000 <br />annually. <br /> <br />DISCUSSION <br /> <br />The Fleet Maintenance Division's annual Vehicle Replacement Program is <br />included in the City's annual budget and identifies vehicles scheduled for <br />replacement. Funding is monitored through a depreciation schedule <br />established with each department. Additionally, the Fleet Division reviews <br />the acquisition in accordance with the City's Hybrid and Alternative Fuel <br />Vehicle Acquisition Policy. Currently, hybrid vehicles are not available in <br />the motorcycle category. <br /> <br />The Police Department's Traffic Division uses specially equipped <br />motorcycles for traffic patrol. The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program <br />(STEP Grant) is funding five additional new motorcycle officers complete <br />with motorcycles. Five motorcycles are under the Fleet Maintenance <br />Division replacement program with guidelines that require motorcycles with <br />over 50,000 miles to be replaced, as maintenance costs increase <br />dramatically at this milestone. For fiscal year 2006-2007, the last <br />Kawasaki motorcycle will be retired along with four 2001 BMW motorcycles <br />with mileage from 58,000 to 77,000 miles. The expanded motorcycle force of <br />26 full time officers and five part time officers will share a total of 23 <br />motorcycles. The last additional motorcycle will provide tighter <br />scheduling of the officers shifts and provide a loaner when motorcycles are <br />in the shop for repair. <br /> <br />22P-1 <br />
