Ten Elements/Service:

Element Number I:

We currently provide tutoring to our after -school clubs. We plan to incorporate this into
our after-school boxing club. This will be an easy transition because we already have
access to the necessary facilities and teachers. The boxing team membership serves as
incentive to raise grades. In turn, thehigherGPA becomes ~n intrinsicincentive.. Our
unique introduction to character development (see element # 6) provides the necessary
tools to achieve and do well in both academic and career pursuits. And the
teachinglmentoring from staff and business/community professionals (see element
number 8) give them insight and connections needed to help them along there chosen
academic and career path.

Element Number 6:

Character development is a unique factor we have incorporated into our after-school
programs. It encourages responsibility and other positiye social behaviors during non-
school hours. Our goal is to provide these young people with the character necessary to
make personal, academic, career-goals and meet these goals successfully in the process of
training them in the sport of boxing. This also aids in proyiding our youth the
opportunity to develop positive social behaviors and life skills. Theses character traits
include: l) respect; 2) responsibility; 3) integrity; 4) compassion; 5) perseverance; 6)
initiative and 7) forgiyeness. AIl of these character traits are necessary to pursue
academic and career goals and be successful once goals are achieved. These character
traits are those found in productive workers and citizens. They represent the type of
character we appreciate in our government and business leaders.

Element Number 7:

We provide study materials, as needed. We have 2 computers at the boxing gym that we
make available to the youth who attend the club.

Element Number 8:

OCYC after-school programs are designed with a teacher/mentor or coach/mentor model
in mind. Therefore, all teachers and boxing coaches serve as adult mentors the entire
time the youth are attending our after-school boxing club. We plan to conduct l2-month
follow-up mentoring service. Beyond this, Marcia Lyrme, Director of Research and
Public Relations spends about 6 hours a week contacting business and community
workers and leaders to give an hour of their time to speak to the youth about how they
achieved their career or job goals. These individuals include entrepreneurs, craftsmen,
policemen, firemen, attorneys, judges, engineers etc. .. We ask them to testify to the
youth about how they first had the dream of becoming _, then how they strategize to
meet that goal and how they jumped hurdles along that path to reach that goal. We then
ask these individuals to allow those youth who <lfe interested in same or similar job or

2
