<br />REQUEST FOR <br />COUNCIL ACTION <br /> <br /> <br />CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: <br /> <br />CLERK OF COUNCIL USE ONLY: <br /> <br />January 16, 2007 <br /> <br />TITLE: <br />PROPOSED EARLY PREVENTION AND <br />INTERVENTION COMMISSION (EPIC) <br /> <br />APPROVED <br /> <br />o As Recommended <br />o As Amended <br />o Ordinance on 1 st Reading <br />o Ordinance on 2nd Reading <br />o Implementing Resolution <br />o Set Public Hearing For <br /> <br /> <br />CONTINUED TO <br /> <br />FILE NUMBER <br /> <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br /> <br />Adopt Ordinance No. establishing the Santa Ana Early Prevention and <br />Intervention Commission (EPIC). <br /> <br />DISCUSSION <br /> <br />The City Council at its regular meeting of January 2, 2007 voted <br />unanimously to establish a commission to address the issues related <br />to gang prevention and intervention and the Council instructed staff <br />to review the structure of the proposed commission and prepare a <br />resolution for Council consideration in two weeks. <br /> <br />With input from City Councilmembers, staff has prepared an ordinance <br />establishing the new commission. The proposed commission will <br />develop a more strategic, coordinated, and collaborative effort <br />between the City, law enforcement agencies, social services, and the <br />general public wi th the obj ecti ve of enhancing opportuni ties for <br />youth in Santa Ana to significantly reduce gang involvement and its <br />negative impact in the community. <br /> <br />The Commission will consist of seventeen members including nine <br />voting members appointed by the Mayor and City Council and eight non- <br />voting members to include one appointed by the governing board of the <br />Santa Ana Unified School District; one appointed by the governing <br />board of the Garden Grove Unified School District; one appointed by <br />the governing board of the Rancho Santiago Community College <br />District; one appointed by the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce; one <br />appointed by another Chamber of Commerce in Orange County selected by <br />the City Council; one appointed by the Director of the Orange County <br />Probation Department; one appointed by the Director of the Orange <br /> <br />508-1 <br /> <br />
