Issue "Employee Handbook for School Crossing Guards". <br />o 2. Instruct guard in importance of always wearing eomplete and proper uniform. <br />o 3. Discuss arriving on time, remaining for entire shift and proper procedures for reporting off. <br />o 4. Review "Emergency Procedures" section of "Handbook", <br />o 5. Review and discuss "Danger Zones" by using graphic in "Handbook". <br /> <br />FIELD TRAINING <br />o 6. Train employee at an intersection with students present. <br />o 7. Guard must be positioned on edge of crosswalk nearest the center of the intersection and facing <br />threats. <br />D 8. Guard must insist and ensure that students always wait on curb for instructions before entering <br />street. <br />D 9. Explain importa,!ce of having guard wait for prompt signal or break in traffic. <br />D 10. Look LEFT _ RIGHT - LEFT (and instruct students to "look both ways") before stepping from <br />curb. <br />o II, Explain the dangers of vehicles entering the crosswalk - especially those turning in the <br />intersection. <br />D 12. Hold STOP sign high above head and raise the other arm to show stop signal to traffic. <br />o 13. Guard must ensure stUdents' safety until they are on opposite curb. <br />D 14. Instruct Guard in the proper use of the whistle- one long blast for emergency purposes only. <br />o 15. Guard may NEVER direct traffic. <br /> <br />FINAL REMINDER <br /> <br />Crossing Guards must always maintain a position that allows them to constantly search in every direction' <br />for danger from vehicles threatening to enter the crosswalk, move to control those vehicles, and be prepared <br />to take evasive action for students (and themselves) if a vehicle does not stop. <br /> <br />FOLLOW UP TRAINING <br /> <br />Supervisor must visit each new employee for observation oftheir skills and ability to control intersection <br />during the first five days oftheir assignment to a site.
