210 <br />WS.A. <br />PUBLIC HEARINGS <br />MOTION: Franklin SECOND: Bist <br />VOTE: AYES: Bist, Christy, Franklin, Lutz, McGuigan (5) <br />NOES: None (0) <br />NOT VOTING: Moreno (1) <br />ABSENT: Pulido (1) <br />WORK STUDY SESSION <br />PROPOSED IDEA INSTITUTE <br />Community Development Agency Executive Director Cindy Nelson <br />briefly outlined for the Council the nature of the IDEA Institute Project <br />touching on: <br />• The two plus two plus two nature of the project — two years of high <br />school, two years at the community college level leading to a final <br />two years at a four-year institution; <br />• The extensive collaboration between Santa Ana College and the <br />University of California Irvine in carefully defining the curriculum; <br />• The collaborative relationship of the City's owning the building, then <br />leasing it to the educational institutions with those institutions being <br />responsible for operation and maintenance; <br />• The involvement of the private sector in defining the curriculum, <br />providing training, education and mentoring; and <br />• The proposed timetable involved in finalizing the terms of the <br />memorandum of understanding, preparing the construction plans, <br />and a begin -construction date with occupancy projected with the Fall <br />of 2002. <br />Nelson then introduced Nello Group representatives Roger Torriero and <br />Bob Hall who reviewed with the Council the proposed renovation of the <br />Historic Santa Ana YMCA for occupancy by IDEA Institute with its <br />mission of providing educational opportunities for the advancement of <br />digital imaging in art, entertainment, and business. The presentation <br />included: what IDEA is about; the Economic Development Collaborative <br />with the City of Santa Ana, UCI, Santa Ana College and the Santa Ana <br />Unified School District; an overview of the process, mission statement <br />and program goals; space requirements; schematic layouts showing <br />building use; existing building and site conditions; proposed site plan; the <br />restoration of historical building character; a work -in -progress animation <br />of building interiors and the next steps to be taken. <br />CITY COUNCIL MINUTES <br />207 <br />JUNE 19, 2000 <br />
