325 <br />COMMENTS <br />Councilmember Christy <br />• Noted that the downtown Fiesta Patrias event in September was <br />well attended and very successful <br />• Asked Manuel Gomez of the City Manager's Office to give an <br />update on planned events for the Anti -Defamation League's <br />CHILDREN OF THE DREAM program. Mr. Gomez reported that <br />during the month of October, four Ethiopian Israeli students will <br />visit five high schools in the Santa Ana and Long Beach School <br />Districts to relate their stories of oppression in Ethiopia. The <br />events are sponsored by the City of Santa Ana, the Orange <br />County Diversity Forum, chaired by Councilmember Christy, and <br />the Anti -Defamation League of Orange County/Long Beach. On <br />October 23rd, a meeting is scheduled at the Police Community <br />Room, and on October 28, 2000 there will be a reception at the <br />Bowers Museum <br />• Presented a poster created by Dezaray Ann Alvarez Gomez, a 6th <br />grade student who won a contest describing "My Day at the <br />Center" sponsored by the FaCT Family Resource Centers <br />• Requested that the Council adjourn in the memory of Kimberly <br />Foote, daughter of Lt. Mike Foote and his wife Marilyn <br />l Councilmember Franklin <br />• Announced that the 501h anniversary celebration of Memorial Park <br />was held the previous weekend and was well attended <br />• Announced that the Orange County Crazies performed at the <br />Don Cribb Theatre on North Main and encouraged residents to <br />see this group known for improvisation and comedy <br />• Congratulated Ron Ono and Cleve Williams of the Parks, <br />Recreation and Community Services Agency for obtaining a grant <br />from the Land and Water Conservation Fund for a Wildlife <br />Sanctuary at Santiago Park <br />• Noted that parents in the Sandpointe Neighborhood had <br />requested an update on the status of the proposed new high <br />school at the Armstrong Ranch property <br />• Requested that the Council adjourn in the memory of two Santa <br />Ana pioneers: <br />Robert Henry "Bob" Newcomb — owner of Newcomb Shoe <br />Company on 4th Street who was 80 years old and resided <br />at a Santa Clara Avenue home on property bought by his <br />grandfather in 1883, and who inherited the shoe company <br />from his father Fred, and <br />Rena Melton- originally lived on Van Ness Street, and in <br />1943 bought 20 acres at a cost of $10,000 in Southwest <br />Santa Ana for a twenty cow milk farm <br />CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 319 OCTOBER 2, 2000 <br />a I <br />__.._ T <br />
