well as not being an inconvenience to pedestrians. Any glass surfaces that get wet during
our cleaning process will be cleaned so as to not leave any dirt or water spots.
Our cleaning process involves many methods and different types of equipment A large
majority of the cleaning at the Civic Center will be done by high pressure, hot water
power washers. These particular units have a heat range from ambient to steam (65
degrees to over 220 degrees) and can be adjusted for different cleaning conditions and
environment They have a pressure range from 800 psi. to 3000 psi. and this can also be
adjusted. The normal range for cleaning is water heated to around 180 degrees and
pressure around 2500 psi. After years of experience in the field, we have found this is the
most effective range of use. It produces enough heat and pressure for a thorough cleaning
without causing damage to the surface you are concentrating on
Some areas may require more than just hot water pressure washing. These areas are high
traffic, public loitering, illegal camping, eating, picnic or patio areas, smoking areas and
building entries and exits. In these cases, along with pressure washing, we will use a mild
concrete soap to loosen dirt and debris. This will help even the tint of the concrete
around these areas and produce a more uniform appearance. Any runoff water and soap
will be reclaimed and hauled off site.
Another area of concern is the tar and petroleum product that seep out of the cracks in the
concrete at the Plaza of the Flags, Plaza of the Sun and in front of the Law Library. We
have found the most effective method of removal is physically scraping the tar off the
surface and using an abrasive to remove the residue. Our method for this is a closely
guarded company secret Our track record in the past proves we are able to remove the
residue without marring the concrete surface. The amount of work involved with
removing the tar is substantial and requires a dedicated technician just for this process. In
the summer months, we will have people on site every morning to walk the area. This
will insure that no tar seeps out of the areas in question and that they are always clean.
Contaminated Water Clean Up and Removal
In the process of cleaning, it will be necessary to insure that no water runoff enters any
storm drains. Our process involves capturing water before it enters the storm drain,
cleaning and then reusing it in a closed loop cleaning process. If we are unable to reuse
the water it is hauled off site and properly disposed of. Three of our five pressure
washing trucks are equipped with reclamation systems. We are approved and certified to
work in "no run off 'areas and have passed the San Bernardino County and San Diego
County clean water certification tests. All of our reclamation equipment is automatic and
can be operated by one technician.
I
I
